Part 13
Ayumi sat quietly in Yoshiki’s large study as he and the princess spoke in hushed tones with two guards. She sighed quietly and looked down at the cup of cocoa in her hands. They’d been doing that for a few hours now. The sun was barely shining in the windows from the horizon and they still hadn’t decided what to do.
The blonde girl looked up from her cup at Gackt, who was sitting quietly in the seat across her. His face looked very calm as he stared at the carpet between them. He’d also been doing that for a few hours. His composed self was only betrayed by the fact that he’d also been pulling his hair during that time too. He was worried, much more than anyone in the room. She wondered if he loved You. It reminded her about that passage of love in the book.
As she took a sip of her warm cocoa, Megumi sat beside her, taking a drink from her own cup.
“I don’t like just sitting here,” Megumi said quietly. “He looks so torn.”
Ayumi nodded. “I’ve never seen anyone torment themselves like that.”
“They must really love each other.” She sighed. “It scares me a little.”
“Why?”
“I don’t want to have to put Hyde through the same thing.”
The blonde looked up at the mermaid and saw the fear in her eyes. Ayumi hoped the same would never happen to them.
“Sometimes it’s hard to believe that love can cause so much pain.” Megumi sipped her coffee.
“Love…” the other girl murmured. “Love,” she said again as a spark ignited in her brain.
“Hm?” Megumi turned to her.
Ayumi set her cup down and took the black haired girl’s hand. “Love. Love can change you.”
“What do you mean?” The mermaid frowned.
“You have to promise. You can’t tell Hyde or Gackt.”
“Tell them what?” Megumi scooted closer.
“I remember reading a passage in the book that my sister had taken that if the one you love says ‘I love you,’ and truly mean it, you will turn human.” Ayumi shook her head. “I think it’s like a spell. They have to say the words from their heart for it to happen. The problem is I don’t know if it’s true because the book never said it was and it also said it’s never been tested.”
Megumi listened with rapt interest and then looked at Gackt. “Well, for his sake, let’s pray it’s true.”
Gackt flinched when Hyde laid a hand on his shoulder before he relaxed and murmured something to the other man. Hyde looked up at the girls worried.
“What are they doing over there?” Ayumi asked, jerking her head at the high prince and the others.
“Determining our best course of action,” Gackt muttered blandly. “I just want him back,” the prince’s voice cracked as he whispered and tears slipped down his cheeks.
The two girls moved to his sides as Hyde kneeled in front of Gackt and hugged him close, whispering back words of comfort. “We’ll get him back,” Hyde kept saying as Gackt cried into his shoulder.
Ayumi noticed that the room had gone silent except for Gackt’s crying and she looked back to see Yoshiki looking up at them all. He and Eriko looked like they were in agony, not being able to do anything. The blonde got up, leaving the prince’s side and walked over to them.
“You don’t know we left,” she said simply and went back to the prince. “Come on. Let’s go get him back.”
Gackt looked up and blinked his tear-filled eyes. “What?”
“Let’s get him back before we lose our chance.”
Gackt looked at Hyde, who looked at Megumi. They all looked up at her and then stood. Majority ruled—they would wait no longer.
“Come to my room. We’ll make plans.” Gackt quickly wiped his cheeks as they all walked to the door, Ayumi following behind. She stopped in the doorway and smiled at Yoshiki before closing the door. Nothing short of death would stop them now.
~*~*~
“Are you sure this is going to work?” Gackt whispered to Ayumi as they crept closer to the fair encampment.
She nodded and kept moving closer to the torches she saw in the distance. It had taken them a few hours to figure out what they were going to do, but in the end, it was all just a matter of how they would distract the guards and break their friend free. Now, in the dead of night, the four inched their way closer and closer, all the while looking out for anyone that might see them.
Once they were close enough, Ayumi gave her cloak to Gackt, and Megumi hers to Hyde. “Ready?” she asked the mermaid who nodded. The two both wore low cut dresses and checked themselves over.
“Do we look okay?” Megumi asked.
“I wouldn’t answer that, Hyde.” Gackt smirked.
“Shut up.” Hyde glared.
“Gackt, I need the pendant.” Ayumi held her hand out as she peeked at the tank. Six guards were walking around, chatting or standing at their stations around the tank. “It looks like six,” she told the men as she fastened the chain around her neck. “We should have their attention, but be careful and don’t make any noise.”
The prince nodded. “We’ll do our best.” He and Hyde pulled masks over their heads.
“Let’s go then.” Ayumi walked out toward the guards as they all stopped, giving her and Megumi wary looks for a moment before relaxing and looking them up and down. They obviously liked the way the girls looked or they wouldn’t have paid any attention.
“Lady Ayumi, what are you doing here so late?” The guard was one from earlier. She remembered that he’d touched You’s cheek and had a feeling that he’d be easy to tempt.
“We wanted to see the merman undisturbed,” she said moving closer to the tank. “Come here.” She waved Megumi closer.
“Who’s your friend?” Another guard touched Megumi’s arm and she giggled quite convincingly.
“Who wants to know?” the mermaid pushed the guard away playfully and grinned.
Ayumi stopped at the glass of the tank and looked in. You was curled up in the corner, probably trying to sleep. She wondered if he could hear them talking outside and tapped on the glass softly. He glanced up and quickly swam over to the glass, a relieved look on his face.
“He must like you miss,” the guard said. “Then again, anyone would like you. You’re very beautiful.”
The blonde giggled. “Oh, stop. I can’t enchant a merman with just my looks alone!” She then pretended not to hear a man on the other side of the tank grunt and fall to the ground.
“Did you hear that?” the guard asked, looking around.
“Hear what?” Ayumi asked, pretending to sneeze as it happened to another.
“There, I heard it again!”
“Oh, my allergies are just being horrible lately,” she complained loudly.
“Do you hear anything, miss?” the guard asked Megumi, who was staring at the merman in the tank intently, as if mystified by its presence.
“Huh?” she asked as the man beside her stumbled forward, another man falling unconscious on him.
“What the…” the guard looked up as Hyde attacked him as Gackt went for another lesser guard nearer to Ayumi.
The girls gasped and pretended to be in shock as now five men were lying on the ground unconscious and the two men went after the last and largest man. The guard was about to let out a yell, but Gackt was too quick, jumping up to deliver a kick in the face before he and Hyde both attacked the man, causing him to fall unconscious seconds later.
The prince pulled his mask off and went to the window as You yelled at him through it, pointing at the big man and making motions with his hands. Everyone gave him confused looks before Hyde pulled off his own mask and started to search the man.
“Keys,” he said as he held up a ring of over a dozen keys. The group then went to work releasing all of the locks that held the cover over the tank. They then had to move the cover without making too much noise.
“Just move one side of it off, then he can get out and we can put it back where it was,” Hyde said from one side. Everyone helped to do as Hyde instructed and soon You was hoisting himself over the edge of the tank, right into Hyde and Gackt’s blanket clad arms. The two women replaced the top slowly as the men carried You to the grass.
“I’m so glad you’re here,” You said as he hugged Gackt close.
“I said I’d protect you,” the prince replied, ignoring the water as he pulled a pack out from under his cloak and pulled out some clothing. “Ayumi!” he hissed as Hyde moved away.
“Coming.” She and Megumi fastened the last of the locks and hurried over. The blonde pulled the chain off of her neck as she leaned down in front of You. “Ready?”
“Hell yes,” You replied anxiously before the female placed the necklace over his head and moved back as Hyde returned with the girls’ cloaks. As the merman began to change, Gackt put a hand over You’s mouth, keeping him screaming and waking all of the fair folk. You whimpered a little after the change was finished and Gackt took his hand away.
“Are you okay?” Gackt asked concerned.
“It just hurts so much…” You pointed at the gash in his thigh.”
Everyone stared in shock. “How did you get that?” Ayumi asked as she fell to her knees, inspecting the injury. She moved her cloak back and started to tear pieces of her dress off and wrap the man’s leg.
“One of the guards got me when they were showing me off.” You winced as she tied the cloths around his leg. “Where did you learn this?”
“Remember those bandages on my back?” She asked, seeing him nod as she finished dressing his wound. “I did them.”
“On your own back?” Gackt looked at her, shocked.
“Vivian would never let me go to a doctor, so I had to learn to do it myself.” Ayumi looked his leg over. “Okay, go on and get dressed so that we can get out of here.”
As Gackt helped the merman put his clothing on, the girls and Hyde inspected the fallen guards and then the area to make sure no one was around to stop them from leaving. Once Gackt had You on his feet, You pulled the prince into a tight hug.
“I was so scared…” he said quietly.
“So was I,” the prince admitted.
“Come on, we have to go.” Hyde tugged on them. “Tearful reunions can be said later.”
“Can you walk?” Gackt asked.
“I’ll manage,” You replied as he limped after the black haired man. “Just get me out of here.”
“Will do tall one, will do.” Hyde grinned and led them away from the campground and back to where they belonged.
~*~*~
Ayumi shook her head at You’s leg which she’d just cleaned and murmured, “It’s going to scar. No one can keep that from happening.”
The brunette sighed. “It’s okay. I’ll live,” he replied, just thankful that he was back where he belonged.
“You?”
The merman looked up from Ayumi’s careful dressing of his wound to her face. “Yes?”
She looked back at Gackt, who she’d made watch from a distance because he was so paranoid about You’s injury.
“I need to tell you something, but you cannot tell Gackt.”
You frowned a little, watching as she then bound his leg properly in gauze this time. “What is it?”
“I read in the book that your parents helped write that someone of merfolk can turn human. The problem is, it’s never been tested, and I don’t know if it’s really true,” she told him as she tied off the gauze.
“How is it done?” he asked quietly, trying to conceal his anxiousness so that Gackt wouldn’t think something was wrong.
Ayumi looked up. “It’s like a spell. The one you love has to say ‘I love you’ first and truly mean it. They have to say the words from their heart.”
You blinked. “That’s it?”
“Why? Did he say it?” She asked inquisitively.
The merman opened his mouth to say yes, but closed it again as he realized that Gackt had never really voiced how he felt about their relationship. You had only ever seen the look in his eyes and actions. “No, he hasn’t said it.”
The blonde sighed in relief. “For a second there, I thought it might not have worked.” She fastened the gauze down tightly to keep it from getting in the way. “All finished. How’s your head, hm?” She leaned over and looked at it.
“It still hurts a little, but I’ll be fine.” He looked up at her as she collected her things. “What should I do?”
“Take two painkillers if it hurts,” she replied simply.
“I meant about the love thing.” You gave her a sour look.
Ayumi smiled. “If he really does love you, he won’t hesitate to say it tonight. Not after all that’s happened.”
“I hope you’re right,” he murmured in reply as she wrapped a blanket around his back.
“Just relax and enjoy the fire.” She kissed his cheek. “I’m going to go see how the other two are doing.”
You nodded as she walked away and Gackt took up the spot in the chair next to You. The prince stared into the fire silently. Would he say it?
Would he say it in time?
