Part 12: Going Under

Changmin jerked awake with a grunt when the bed shifted. He calmed when a hand touched his shoulder and a familiar pair of lips kissed the back of his neck. But then he realized why he’d woken—someone was coming.

The hand tightened on his shoulder and Junsu murmured, “They’re coming in here.”

“The door is locked, but the guards have keys,” he related as Junsu shifted.

“Turn over, lay on my back and act like you’re about to bite me,” he hissed as Changmin followed the order.

But he knew they wouldn’t believe it unless he had the look in his eyes. “I’m going to have to bite you.”

“What?” Junsu gasped when Changmin bit down to extend his canines into his lover’s skin. He pulled back as the scent made his eyes focus on the blood, his teeth staying extended as he heard the lock click before the door was pulled open. Flicking his eyes over, Kame’s assistant stopped with a smirk, radiating pleased shock.

“Kamenashi-sama wished me to make sure you’re getting the payments, and I see you are. Carry on,” he finished with a wave of his hand and the door was pulled closed by the guard. He waited until they were well down the hall before he relaxed and leaned down to lick the blood off Junsu’s neck and kiss the spot with a quiet apology.

“At least I got warning,” he said as they sat up and he rubbed his neck. “How are you feeling?”

Changmin glanced down at the remnants of cuts, and the bruises that were now a disgusting yellow/green color. He stretched and moved back and forth. “Doesn’t hurt anymore.”

“Good,” Junsu replied before stealing a kiss and moving to slide off the bed and collect his things. “I only came to make my payment, so I better get Kumi’s report and be on my way.”

“Won’t Kame be suspicious?” Changmin asked as he pulled the blankets over himself and watched his lover dress.

“If he asks, I’ll just say the scent of your blood was too much for me to ignore when I was walking by the room.” He snuck a glance at Changmin with a smirk. “Which I do enjoy, don’t get me wrong.”

Changmin snorted. “I’ll tell him I enthralled you with my power.”

Junsu raised an eyebrow. “The eye thing? With the silver?”

“Yeah, haven’t you done that before?” He couldn’t help but be amused when Junsu shook his head.

“Junghyun did it to me once to show me how it worked, and I did it once because she wanted me to know how to work it myself, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it again. I don’t like making people do things without consent.” Junsu shrugged and Changmin found it to be so very like him to think like that.

“You can try it on me if you want to practice. I’m pretty good at resisting,” Changmin told him. “Kumi had a difficult time with me.”

Junsu laughed. “I’ll be sure to remember that.” He then moved to the bed and pressed a kiss to Changmin’s lips, hand at the back of Changmin’s neck before he leaned their foreheads together. “I’ll be back in a few weeks.” Another kiss was shared before Junsu retreated out the door and was gone.

And suddenly Changmin didn’t know what to do with himself. He glanced around the room. He didn’t necessarily want to read, but writing in his journal would pass the time. Collecting his thoughts, Changmin related what had happened since the last time he wrote and when finished, paused, feeling like he should write something else. He glanced up and noticed the tiger fang that Junsu had given him next to a tray that held other odds and ends he’d manage to collect over the years.

He picked the fang up and turned it over in his fingers, a soft smile threatening to escape.

Something always brings me back to you.

~*~

It was weeks before Changmin even thought of Junsu coming back again. The court had new guests and with that came Kame and a whirlwind of parties that Changmin was forced to attend by the chain attached to his collar. He didn’t really think about it. To be honest, he didn’t really think much at all. Going through the motions was the easiest, but everyone was pleased with him. Especially Kame, and his other pet Jin, who tended to look to Changmin for help, since he’d never been in the situation.

Once everything was back to normal, Changmin was relieved. He didn’t like being around so many people, trying to block out all of the emotions. But eventually, something always brought Changmin’s thoughts back to Junsu. He was just stopped outside his room, wondering when Junsu was going to return when Kumi all but ran straight into him.

“Whoa,” he caught her when she teetered precariously on her sandals before he righted her, very unlike her normal perfection. “Where’s the fire?” he asked quietly.

“Junsu,” she blurted out, fear radiating from her.

“What about Junsu?” he asked, her alarm hitting him and she now had his full attention.

“Kame is going to capture him, and he doesn’t know when Junsu is going to get here, and so neither do I, but I know that he’s coming soon. Some scout reported that he was entering the city a little while ago and was on his way here.” Everything spilled out of her at a whispered mumble, but Changmin understood every word.

“I’ll find him,” he told her and took off.

“Wait!” he heard her call but he was already on his way. He slid to a stop near the stairs that many a vampire traveled up and down every day, and slipped into a rarely used corridor to lean against the wall and close his eyes. He’d done this before, if only to figure out what kind of mood Kame was in, but not on the scale he was about to attempt.

Changmin let down all of his barriers and spread his senses out, trying to feel out where Junsu was. He knew the way Junsu always felt and would know him immediately when he felt the vampire come into his range, so it was just a matter of waiting and hoping to any god that Kumi could distract Kame while he did so. He wasn’t sure how long he’d been waiting, but he finally felt a new disturbance against his outer senses before he recognized it as Junsu. As the vampire moved closer, he shrank his senses closer to himself as well as he could, but they tried to stay out. It was a struggle, but he had them at a decent range by the time Junsu entered the building and Changmin dropped his concentration to just wait in the hallway. By the time Junsu was heading down the stairs, he was well within Changmin’s normal range.

As Junsu was about to pass the corridor Changmin was in, he reached out to grab Junsu and hauled him away down the corridor. Junsu struggled at first, but Changmin send out a wordless feeling to him and he went along until Changmin was convinced no one would see them. He then pulled Junsu into a tight hug, his heart pounding as he wondered how he would say all the things he needed to say.

“What’s wrong?” Junsu pulled back and Changmin touched his cheek before pulling him into a kiss.

“You need to leave,” he said when the kiss ended , and it broke his heart to do it.

Junsu stared at him, hurt. “Why?”

“Kame plans to claim you,” he said quietly and moved to pull Junsu back to the door, but Junsu held his ground.

“He won’t.” The determination in his gaze almost fooled Changmin.

“He can, and he will. You know that.” He rested his hand on Junsu’s cheek again. “You know me.”

“You don’t want me to go.”

“Of course I don’t.”

“Then come with me.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

Changmin shook his head. “He’ll track me.”

“I can hide you. Namie can hide you.”

“No, you can’t.” Changmin held Junsu against the wall. “You can’t assume that if you show up at her place with me on your arm that she’ll agree to it. Do you know what I am? I’m his truthseer. She can’t protect me. I’m too valuable to him.”

“You don’t know that,” Junsu countered.

“Neither do you. You know how powerful Kame is.” He rested his hands on Junsu’s shoulders and looked him in the eyes. “I don’t want your life to become mine. I don’t want him to break you.”

“So, come with me,” Junsu insisted, his concern almost winning Changmin.

But Changmin deflected and looked away, tugging him toward the hallway. “You need to go before he finds out you’re here.”

“No.” He planted his feet and Changmin knew that the longer he waited, the less he would want Junsu to leave and the worse trouble they would be in.

“Please, Junsu. Don’t make this any harder for me than it already is!” He took a breath and swallowed, trying to crush the feelings that threatened to surface. “Please go.”

“Just come with me! All you have to do is go up those stairs—”

“If you take me up those stairs, you’ll never get out of here.” Changmin warned, and felt the fear in Junsu as he took it to heart.

Junsu looked away and bit his lip. It was hard to watch—feel him like this. He’d never seen yellow around Junsu, but the fear made it appear as Changmin tried to will his sight away. He let Junsu pull him closer, not wanting to let go himself.

“I’ll come back for you.” Junsu touched their foreheads together. “I promise.” He then pulled Changmin down into a kiss that he fell straight into, deepening it and pouring all of his feelings out to Junsu. He couldn’t say all of the things he wanted to say; he could never find the words or the time. Nothing made him feel the way Junsu did, and to cast that all away scared him. When it ended, he heard a shaky breath from Junsu before he looked up to catch Changmin’s gaze and whispered determined, “Wait for me.”

It struck Changmin and it took him a moment to realize he had to let go. Junsu tried to pull away and hesitated, so Changmin gave him a gentle push mouthing ‘go’ before Junsu nodded, torn, as he finally turned and ran up the stairs. Alone, Changmin gripped the wall as he suddenly realized he may never see Junsu again. The ache radiated out from his chest as he tried to control it—numb it like he always did. He took some time, trying to manage it as he leaned on the wall. He could live with this, he told himself. As long as Kame couldn’t have Junsu, it was all okay. Over and over, he told himself this, taking time to let Junsu get away before he faced Kame. When he finally had himself convinced, he moved out from the corridor he was in and into another hallway, trying to make his way back to his room. He was halfway there when Kame and an entourage of guards stopped him, and he wasn’t smiling.

But his new pet, Jin was, and it seemed he was learning fast.

“I see your training wasn’t as thorough as I’d thought.”

His words knocked the breath out of Changmin’s lungs. How did he know?

“Your goodbye should have been done somewhere more private,” Jin taunted as anger flooded into Changmin. Stupid. He couldn’t have gotten any deeper.

Changmin glanced around to see the hallways deserted for once. To his relief, he would be taking punishment without a spectacle, something out of character for Kame. Then again, he couldn’t have anyone see how his pet—his loyal, precious pet—had betrayed him for another. But that’s when he saw Kumi, far down the corridor, peeking around the corner as she watched, worried. Hopefully, Kame didn’t suspect her. He could take the punishment as long as she wasn’t implicated. She worked for Namie, so she could get messages out, and that was the comfort that Changmin needed.

“He won’t get away, and neither will you, Ishiko.” Kame’s voice cut deep as he stepped forward.

Changmin flinched when Kame appeared inches away from him. He stared at his master, unaffected by the anger, but confused by the delight he suddenly felt. And that’s when he saw Kame let go of the dagger he’d driven into the left side of his chest. He tried to gasp for air, but only fell to his knees when everything began to swim. He didn’t really feel any pain, but a numbness that spread throughout his chest from the spot where the dagger sat. Finally, he coughed, the familiar metallic taste on his tongue as he saw blood on his hands and dripping to the floor. The numbness dragged him down as his energy left him, sinking to the floor as he gave in, one name on his lips.

And then he couldn’t feel anything.

~*~

Junsu slipped through the streets, doing his best to track and lose his tails, and make sure he didn’t run into anyone that might have gotten in front of him. This was going to be tricky, but he knew he could do it. It took him longer than he’d wanted to drop the tails, but he finally managed to get rid of them before he finally made his way to Namie’s compound. One hop over the wall and he was met with a dagger at his neck. He glanced up to watch the guard relax and step back.

“Damnit, Kim-san. Stop doing that!” he growled and returned his dagger to its sheath.

“But it keeps you on your toes,” Junsu said as he pointed at the guard who just sighed in annoyance. “Where is Amuro-san?”

“In the garden,” he replied as he jerked his head in that direction. Junsu gave his thanks and hurried away. He was on his knees facing Namie before she even had the chance to greet him.

“Amuro-san, I need your help.” He hoped that she would at least hear him out.

“Good evening to you too,” her voice was pleasant, so she must have been in a good mood.

“I need to get my contact out of Kamenashi’s coven,” he glanced up to see her blink in surprise.

“Why?” her voice turned firm.

“Kamenashi was going to try to break me, and my contact warned me to leave,” he replied honestly to hear her sigh.

“Junsu, it was your job to infiltrate. You can’t run away when you get scared of the leader,” she told him in disapproval. “Though I admit, Kamenashi is not kind and I know what his breaking methods are like.”

Junsu opened his mouth to reply when a stabbing pain hit him in the chest as the fog hit him with a vision of Changmin falling to the floor—a dagger in his chest—being choked by Kame—beaten—killed—tortured—stabbed—screaming—killed—bones broken—screaming—crying—Junsu cried out. He was lying on the ground before Namie sobbing and he couldn’t stop it. Changmin’s feelings and power were too strong for him to block, not this time. Servants fluttered around him asking if he was all right as they helped him sit up. One offered him a face towel and he took it as he tried to get his emotions under control.

“A vision?”

Junsu glanced up at Namie’s calm face as he tried to control his breathing, taking deep, slow breaths. “Yes.”

“Of Changmin?” Worry appeared in her eyes.

“Yes.” He nodded.

“You are connected somehow,” she murmured quietly as she glanced away in thought. “What will happen?”

“Short term future,” Junsu managed as he tried to find the words. “Kame is going to kill him.”

A gasp escaped her as she pulled back. “That seems out of character.”

“Three times.” Junsu watched as her shoulders fell and she stared at him in shock. “And in between, he’s going to beat and torture him,” he could barely get out a whisper.

She bit her lip. “Junsu, he’s just Kame’s pet. You know I can’t order him to be pulled out for that. He’s too good a source of information…” she seemed indecisive. He needed to tip the balance.

“I know, but he’s…” Junsu trailed off, the tail end of the vision coming back to him. He tried to grasp it, like a thought he couldn’t put his finger on.

“I can’t. He needs to be something that can give me an advantage if he’s out of Kame’s grasp,” she told him, her sympathy honest.

“He’s Kame’s truthseer!” he blurted out immediately as her jaw dropped in surprise.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked in irritation, eyebrows knitted together.

“I put it in my reports!” he countered and she opened her mouth, then closed it as she went quiet for a moment and glanced away. She’d obviously forgotten Changmin’s other job. It was easy, as he’d always been referred to as Kame’s pet.

“I apologize, you did.” She caught his eyes with her own again as she drew herself back up. “A truthseer is indeed valuable. If you can get him out, I will protect the both of you.”

“Are you certain? He was convinced that he was too valuable to trouble you,” Junsu added, worried.

“Anyone with a gift out of Kamenashi’s grasp is worth protecting. I can guarantee his protection,” she told him, her eyes sharp, solidifying her reasoning.

Relief flooded through Junsu as he slumped back. He could get Changmin out with the promise of protection! But something still wasn’t right. “If you’ll permit me, Amuro-san, I feel I missed seeing something in the vision.”

Namie nodded as she’d seen him get visions and meditate before. He crossed his legs and relaxed as he concentrated to call the vision back into his mind. He eyes came open when he realized what it was.

“Someone saw me.” He looked up to exchange a glance with her.

“Kamenashi will know you work for me.” She spoke the obvious.

“I need to kill the scout.” He nodded.

“Go. And bring your Changmin back with you, or I’ll consider your mission a failure,” the last being a tease as her eyes sparkled. They both knew he would succeed.

“I will bring him back,” Junsu said with a nod and bowed before he took off and out of the compound.

If he could kill the vampire that tracked him and get in without anyone noticing or alerting them to his presence, he could definitely get Changmin out.

Wait for me.
