Part 6: Daylight

“Hey, eat your food.”

He stared off as a young man tried to get his attention.

“Come on, the doctors, if you can call them that, say you should eat. Please?”

“Someone will be attacked by the river.”

The young man blinked. “What?”

“They’ll die.”

“Junsu?”

“Hm?” he regarded the young man blankly.

“Um, here. Food.”

“Okay.”

--

“You’re going down,” he said with a happy grin.

You’re cheating.” The other man crossed his arms.

“Cheating?” another asked.

--

“I’m coming,” A man demanded as another walked away.

“Just don’t get in my way.” The woman sniffed teasingly.

“Please, miss, don’t underestimate me.”

--

The girl was lying next to the water on the shore. She wasn’t moving at all. Something red, a line of red liquid connected her to the water’s edge. He wondered what it meant.

--

A woman watched quietly as the sun set, a look of worry on her face.

“Wherever you are, I hope it’s a place that’s better than here.”

--

“Why?” he cut the other man off and looked up at him. “Why did they have to leave? I didn’t want them to leave!” he could hear himself getting louder with every word, but he couldn’t stop. It hurt so much. “They didn’t even give me a chance! They didn’t even come! He—” he choked on the word. “He was the only one who said goodbye!”

--

“Junsu. You did it again.”

“Hm?” he answered as the wisps of air moved around him. Something was happening again. He put his hands up to wave them away, but they kept moving toward him.

“They found a girl near the river last week. She was dead,” the young man said softly.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” he replied absently as the clouds seemed to come up and hit him in the face, and he jerked back in surprise.

‘Me too,’ seemed to echo in his mind.

--

No. You’re not going to die,” the man told him confidently and looked to another.

The elder looked torn for a moment before he finally pulled out his dagger and held it to his arm. He said something, but all that could be made out was “Do you accept?”

The young man stared up at the dagger as if transfixed.

“Yes.”

--

“I’m going to find a way to get you out of here. I promise.” The young man squeezed his hands as things got a bit fuzzy again.

“Okay.”

--

“I love you.”

He was shocked at first, but then he smiled softly.

“I know."

~***~

There was pain—blistering, hot pain all over his body. And he was moving… but not? It didn’t matter, the pain mattered, and it was always there, searing through him. Was he on fire? He was going to die, wasn’t he? It hurt so much. He didn’t know how long he could last. Someone told him to hold on. He tried so hard.

And after a long while, the pain receded.

Then he slept.

~***~

He sat straight up in surprise, breathing in with a gasp, holding the air in his lungs before coughing it out, not used to the feeling. Air. Clean, pure air was filling his lungs. He looked down at his hands, really looked at them and saw them clearly for the first time. They shook as he breathed hard. Why was he breathing so hard?

“Here, drink this.”

He took the cup in front of him and gulped down the liquid, realizing just how thirsty he was in that moment. Finished, he looked up to see a small woman holding out another cup and drank that down as well. He went through four cups before he finally calmed enough and took a good look at the cup to see the few drops of red liquid left at the bottom. He licked his lips, curious.

“Better?”

She was holding her hand out for the cup and he handed it back as she took it to a basin to wash. It was then he finally let his eyes take in the space before him. He was in some sort of small hut. It had one door and a window, outside of which he could see the blue sky. Sky! Something he hadn’t seen for so long! He didn’t really remember seeing it before, but he longed to! He wanted to go outside…

“Do you know your name?”

His eyes flicked back to the woman, who was now facing him. “Junsu,” he answered, then hesitated. That was all he knew.

“Kim Junsu,” she prompted.

“Yes,” he replied, nodding slowly. Why didn’t he remember that? Actually, he didn’t remember much of anything to be honest. “Where am I?”

“We are in the far country of China,” she replied quietly.

“You’re Korean.” He’d meant to ask, but it came out as a statement. She was speaking Korean, so she must be. She nodded and he was relieved he hadn’t offended her.

“I am.” Her stance and facial expression gave nothing away. “What do you remember?”

Junsu looked down at his hands, scared that he might not see them again. “Hardly a thing. I only remember that I couldn’t see clearly. There were always clouds and smoke in the way. What does that mean?” He looked up at her in confusion, hoping for an explanation for how he felt.

Sympathy showed on her face and Junsu was relieved that she felt anything, as stone faced as she seemed to be at first. “I do not know, but I will help you find out.” She moved to the bed that he sat on and touched his shoulder to push him back down. “For now, you should rest.”

“One more question,” he said as he propped himself up on one elbow. “What did you tell me to drink?” The odd metallic, yet pleasant taste in his mouth had him curious.

“You will have more when you wake again. Then I will explain it to you,” she assured him as she pulled a blanket up over him. “All of it.”

~*~

“You’re a vampire.”

Junsu stared out at the sunset from his position sitting against a tree trunk. He was a ways off from the hut, and it was peaceful outside. It was peaceful everywhere, except inside his mind.

Her name was Lee Junghyun. As they’d walked on a path outside, she had said a friend of hers had saved him from a mental hospital. Confused, Junsu had stopped and asked what that was.

“A place where they take care of people who can’t take care of themselves,” she’d explained calmly, but it seemed from her tone that she’d only scratched the surface. “Is there a reason you couldn’t take care of yourself?”

Junsu had frowned as he tried to think back. “I only remember always being surrounded by a fog or clouds, and sometimes they would come up and hit me.” He’d moved his hand in front of his face, trying to explain it. “Not hit me, like go into me, but in my head they would hit me. And I would see things, but I don’t remember them. Just scattered images.”

She’d nodded then. “You have some sort of power in your mind that your brain, as a human, couldn’t control. You should be able to learn and control it now that you’ve been changed.”

“Changed?” he’d asked, and almost wished he hadn’t.

She told him he was a vampire, and explained how he’d been changed by someone putting their blood into him. When he asked why someone would change him, she answered so that the power wouldn’t control him, and that he could have control of his mind.

“The hospital couldn’t help?” he’d asked.

“Sometimes they’re able to damage the brain so it can’t do it anymore, or make it so the person can control it secretly. Sometimes it doesn’t have an effect and sometimes they just damage the brain, so it doesn’t function properly at all,” she said quietly and paused. “Did they ever hook you up to wires?”

An image hit him—being strapped down into a chair, fear pouring into him as he struggled to move. Hands attached wires to his body. Junsu shook as the image left him and she asked if he was okay. He shook his head and moved away to lean on the tree. They had sent electricity through those wires. He knew it, but how he knew was a mystery to him. All he knew was that it had hurt and it had scared him to death the few times it happened. He remembered the fog had cleared for a few days after that, but of course, it came back.

It always came back.

He remembered other things, painful things, but he didn’t know how to explain them to Junghyun. He wasn’t sure he wanted to. Reliving those things wasn’t what he wanted to do. Forgetting them along with anything else he’d known was probably a better idea. Now he was a vampire and had the ability to take control of his mind. Whoever this person was that saved him, he would have to thank them. He was grateful for the cloud having been lifted and being able to finally see everything around him. This was what life was supposed to be like. He wanted to enjoy this. He wanted to forget and live a new life.

Junsu stared out at the bright sunset, pinks and purples contrasting against yellows and blues. He’d never seen anything like it. He didn’t want this to be the last sunset he ever saw. He wanted to see more, and lots of colors and experiences to go with them. But deep down, he feared that the fog would return. Maybe Junghyun could help with that.

A glance to his left showed Junghyun looking between some flowers and pulling up little green plants between them. Curious, Junsu left his tree and returned to her. He wanted to know—he wanted to know everything.

“What kind of flower is that?” he asked as he crouched next to her. She raised a surprised eyebrow and he saw her eyes turn red when the sunlight hit them. “Your eyes,” he leaned closer at the change and she smiled.

“Your eyes will do it too, in the sunlight, which is why we don’t live with humans. The would find us out, and we would be tempted to drink their blood.”

“It would kill them?” he asked worried. “Drinking their blood?”

She nodded. “And they would be angry and kill us for killing one of their own.”

Junsu nodded and then blinked in surprise as she told him the name of the flower. He smiled and repeated it. “Will you teach me? The names of the flowers, the plants, everything?”

“You’ll have to work for it,” she told him with a look for good measure.

“I would be suspicious if I didn’t,” he replied with a grin that made her smile.

“I will teach you as much as I know, but first,” she rested a hand on his shoulder, “I have to teach you to be a vampire.”

And she was good on her word. For the next few weeks, Junghyun explained to Junsu what it meant to be a vampire and how his body, and life, had changed. To Junsu, he considered it a real life that he could finally live and sucked up the information like a sponge.

Junghyun was a lone wolf sort, so she taught Junsu the way she lived as a vampire. She didn’t like associating with others unless she knew the vampire or needed money to live. Apparently, she had recently been saved by the vampire who turned Junsu over to her care. She was taking care of him as a courtesy, but admitted it would be nice to have company for a while.

Teaching Junsu to drink blood was a challenge at first. He knew that from the beginning when he first heard the word vampire. Having to drink blood made him squeamish, but when Junghyun explained that she only used animals for the blood she drank, it calmed him. And he didn’t have to kill the animal if he controlled how much he drank. At least his body wanted the blood and it tasted good, or else he might have had a hard time with this.

She also explained that while some vampires tended to work alone, others formed groups or organizations called covens. Sometimes solo vampires would make agreements with those covens to work for them when needed, but stayed alone for the rest of their time. Junsu wordlessly absorbed all she had to tell him about living alone and in a coven, and Junsu found that he would rather live alone instead of have to follow some code in a coven. She also mentioned that sometimes vampires travelled in small groups for safety, or with their mate. When he asked if there were vampire families, she smiled and had to explain that vampires couldn’t copulate. Persistent, Junsu reiterated his question, asking if vampires formed families due to bonds instead of bloodlines.

She tilted her head at him curiously before answering, “Like you and I for instance? We are student and teacher, but if we had maybe two or three others living with us, you are saying this would be a family that has decided to live together?”

“That’s my question,” he said with a satisfied nod.

“I’ve never heard of this, but it sounds interesting.” She smiled then, and he couldn’t help but smile back.

Junsu’s new life filled him with all kinds of questions that he was asking Junghyun at all hours, depending on if she was sleeping or busy. She didn’t always answer his questions right away and sometimes she would set him on a chore and would answer when it was finished. Other times, she would quiz him about other things to give him more information as a reward. He liked this a lot, as it made him want to learn as much as he could. All the while, the fog and clouds stayed away, and Junsu couldn’t have been happier. He didn’t care if Junghyun thought he had a power. Maybe his brain hadn’t worked right and now he’d been healed. All that mattered was that he was going to live, and enjoy this life that he couldn’t before.

One month after he’d begun his life with her, Junghyun took Junsu with her to the village she would travel to in order to barter for what she needed. Wide eyed and curious, Junghyun told Junsu to keep his thirst in check and his eyes sharp, for not everyone was trustworthy and honorable. Immediately, Junsu closed himself, like he would try to when the fog came and kept his eyes on everything that happened around them. Junghyun taught him how the people lived and how their currency and bartering worked. He watched carefully to see how she haggled for the lowest price she could before paying and getting her things. He also noticed how interesting the humans smelled, much better than the animals they drank from. He understood why they didn’t live near the humans now, but he wondered if one could get used to it enough to ignore it.

“You did very well,” she commented as they were walking back. “You didn’t look as wide eyed as you usually do. I have to admit, it was surprising to see you so serious and curt.”

He blushed, understanding it was a compliment as she smiled at him. “Thank you.”

“You can be friendly, but just pay a close eye to your coin purse,” she advised as he decided to try this next time.

As they were walking, he finally noticed. “It’s overcast.”

“Which is why we went to town today. The sun betrays our true nature, but the clouds help to hide it,” she told him and he realized.

“I won’t be able to interact with humans properly, will I?” he glanced over to see her shake her head.

“To be honest, Junsu, it really is for the best to avoid them. They start asking questions when you can’t hurt yourself and move too quickly without thinking. They also notice that we don’t age. Humans aren’t stupid, you can only keep them in the dark for so long. Just as you are curious, they are too,” she told him with a smile. “You’re very human for a vampire.”

He chuckled as he realized she was teasing him. “I just want to learn what I’ve been missing.”

They walked on in silence, and he went over the things he’d learned in his head, in case she quizzed him before dinner once they’d returned. They were entering the property when she asked him,

“Why did you trust me?”

Junsu stopped and looked at her—really looked at her. She was tiny, maybe a full head shorter than him. Her body was slight, but he knew there was power behind every bone in her body. He’d seen her cutting firewood. What was he supposed to say? “Because I had to. What was I supposed to do? Run off into the countryside and try to learn how to act like a vampire by myself? I didn’t even know what I was.”

“You’re very trusting,” she told him with a sly smile. She was teasing him again.

“I was in a mental hospital for being crazy, not stupid,” he pointed out and she laughed. “Besides, I knew you were the only one I could trust. Actually, you were the only one around.” He smirked and she gave him a suspicious look. “Are you being too human now?” he teased.

She laughed. “I think every vampire longs to be human again, but doesn’t want to give up the powers and long life. I don’t think we ever forget how to be human as we once were, but we accept the change.”

He watched her for a moment. “Are you the one who turned me?”

She smiled and shook her head. “No, but I know him. Experimenting always. He wanted to see if someone he chose in a mental hospital actually had powers.”

“So, I’m an experiment? I should have expected that.” He sighed as she offered a sympathetic smile. “Do I have any powers?”

“They have yet to show themselves. You said that a fog would be around you?” she asked as he nodded. “You must have some sort of sight that was clouding your human vision. Not all powers make themselves known immediately. Sometimes they hit strong and painful. You’ll need to be ready for it.”

“How do I do that?” he asked as they slowed, nearing their hut.

“I’ll teach you to meditate, so that when the time comes, you’ll be able to calm yourself and hopefully control it so that you don’t hurt anyone. Or yourself.” She smiled. “Shall we begin tonight?”

“Alright.”

The beginning was only a little confusing at first. But maybe I had an in, so . . .

But the idea of Su's powers coming to him like a fog works really well. (I must say, I love how he describes it as a cloud hitting him. Don't know why. Don't even know if it sounds Su-ish. I just like the imagery.) And the dynamic between him and Junghyun is better than I could have imagined. She's so gentle.

I'm enjoying Kumi's role in this, too, but I must be honest, I was particularly excited to get to Junsu's part. I was expecting it might be less concise, but you really did say everything that needed to be said, so why not? The Twilight equivalent of his backstory (if I can call it that) is all but nonexistent anyway, so your description of things fills Su's out nicely.

god i love your comments~

yes, you had an in, stop being a snot XD;

thank you! i was trying to think of a way to describe how it would impair him to make him unable to take care of himself and that was what came to mind, like he was always in a fog and unable to to function properly. imo, i think its adorable how scared he gets when the fog hits him again :3

lol, less concise? you thought i would skip over some things? mostly, i didn't think su and hyun's daily life was important, or him learning to be a vampire, but the power seemed more important because it eventually involves changmin ;D i'm not sure if alice had much of a backstory, and jasper's was SO LONG omfg.

why am i enjoying writing such emo stuff? XD; poke me if you have anymore questions!

Because emo stuff is fun?

No, what I meant by less concise was that I thought it might take longer than half a chapter to cover Su's time in the asylum (but I didn't know what you were planning so . . .). But he still has more of a backstory than Alice. *snotsnotsnot*
