13: in which persistence pays off
Micky’s play was a success.
They sold out the weekend shows and Jaejoong’s professor quickly framed and put up some of the pictures he’d taken of the actors at the entrance of the theater. Jaejoong only attended two of the weekend performances, as he couldn’t for the two on Thursday and Friday due to work, but he did manage to get quite a few compliments during the intermissions. The director would pull Jaejoong over every time someone complimented the pictures and tell them what a genius the young man was. Jaejoong would resist a blush and thank everyone. Finally, he escaped to the concession stand to avoid it after the third time. Taking pictures didn’t make him genius. The director just wanted to make himself look good, and while Jaejoong didn’t really care, he didn’t need to stand through it.
Today the drama players were striking the set, tearing everything down to build it anew for whatever play came next. Jaejoong heard from Micky that it was supposed to be a musical, so maybe everyone would get to hear Micky’s vocal talents to go along with his acting. While Jaejoong liked hanging out with the drama students, he skipped out on striking, since he hadn’t helped build it anyway. No, he was going to the bookstore.
He didn’t need any books, unfortunately. After meeting up with Junsu at the Starbucks (following the intense text flirting), they had both forgotten to solidify a date between them. While Jaejoong didn’t think it was really necessary at this point, Micky teased him mercilessly for forgetting again and he decided to put his foot down. He would go to the bookstore Junsu worked at and ask him out—hopefully during a break.
Apparently, Junsu would work shifts in the middle of the day if he didn’t have class. With the bookstore so close to the university, Jaejoong had to assume it was convenient. He slipped in the doors having walked from his last class and breathed in the warm air. It had been getting chillier out each day and while his coat kept him warm, forgetting his scarf had been a mistake.
He spotted Junsu at the center of the store with… Boa? Curiosity piqued, Jaejoong trotted down the center aisle to greet his friends.
“You got a job here?” he asked.
“I just started a few days ago,” she replied with a smile.
“She’s taking my place because I’m quitting,” Junsu told him and explained how he was going to be helping out at his dad’s pizza shop instead, since it was closer to his home. “Not that I don’t like it here, since it’s close to the university, but dad needed some help when one of his employees quit because her husband was switching jobs.”
“Ah, I see.” Jaejoong nodded as he noticed Boa carefully and quietly moving away to give them privacy as she straightened things. “Does that give you less time for other things?”
Junsu smiled. “Hopefully, it’ll give me more,” he said as Jaejoong felt his chest flutter.
“Good,” he replied and tapped a book on one of the shelves to straighten it. “Doing anything later?”
“I’ve got something at the campus…” He glanced at his watch. “Oh geez, I should clock out or I’ll be late. Wait here,” he told Jaejoong and went to steer Boa toward their back room.
Jaejoong sighed. Wait here. Okay. He leaned against the bookshelf and sighed. What was he waiting for if Junsu had something to do? Maybe they could do something together afterward? But what was he supposed to do while wai—shit. The gallery was coming down! He had to go help with that and get his art back so he could take them with him. Ah! He could also give Junsu the picture once they met up again afterward! Genius, he told himself.
Junsu and Boa hurried over and the three made their way back to campus together. Jaejoong shivered when a particularly cold gust of wind hit them and was surprised when a scarf was being wrapped around his neck. Junsu just grinned as Jaejoong blushed and knew his face wouldn’t feel cold for a while. Boa found the entire affair cute and cooed at them for it. Junsu ignored her and put his arm around Jaejoong. They walked the last few blocks that way as Jaejoong felt warmer than he’d ever felt during the fall or winter.
They all walked into the art building and Jaejoong started for the stairs. “I’ll meet up with you when we’re done taking down the gallery. Should I text you?”
“Sure.” Junsu grinned. “Later!” he waved and Jaejoong took off up the stairs. He paused at the top when he realized he still had Junsu’s scarf. Oh well, he thought as he smiled, one more reason to have to see him.
Jaejoong spent the next few hours helping his professor and a couple of his classmates take the gallery apart and figure out which piece belonged to which student when they came to pick them up. They had a sort of rush at one point and had to make the students get into a line before they would give their art back. Once they were finished, the professor took the remaining pieces that hadn’t been claimed and put them into one of the storage rooms so that he could return them later. As they were gathering their things, Jaejoong felt a bit of pride at helping out and it swelled when his professor thanked him for taking the time to help.
As he organized his things, Jaejoong realized he’d been doing the work with Junsu’s scarf on. With a shake of his head, Jaejoong pulled his coat on and just grinned. Soon enough it wouldn’t be the scarf around his neck, it would be Junsu’s arms. Hopefully.
He sent a text to Junsu as he made his way down the stairs and noticed a poster when he flipped his phone shut. Tryouts for the next play were going on. He studied the poster for a moment, and when he didn’t get a text reply, Jaejoong decided to go check it out. Micky would probably be down there anyway, since he liked to hang out and chat with everyone after his turn.
Entering the theater, Jaejoong let his eyes scan over the students in the audience chairs as he looked for Micky. What he saw was not what he expected. Junsu and Boa stood near the corner at the front, talking to one another as Jaejoong stared. Were they trying out? Both of them? This needed further investigation. He quickly trotted down the stairs only to be caught.
“Gotcha!” Micky’s arm grabbed him around the shoulders. “Came to cheer me on? Well, I already went, so you’re too late.”
“Could you tell your ego to let me go?” Jaejoong teased as Micky put a hand on his chest, hurt. With a grin, Jaejoong took the opportunity and escaped to Junsu and Boa.
“Hey! What are you doing here?” Junsu asked as he approached, Micky obviously following.
“I could ask the same of you,” Jaejoong replied, looking suspicious.
They chuckled nervously as Junsu spoke up. “Well, we both wanted to try out, and Boa said she’d do it if I did it.”
“You show me yours, I’ll show you mine?” Micky asked. “Nice one,” he held out a fist to Boa who bumped it back. “Think they’ll blow me out of the water?”
Jaejoong squinted at the two and hummed thoughtfully. “Considering they’re in better shape than you and might be able to sing better due to this… yes.”
Micky pouted.
Jaejoong shrugged with a grin.
Micky sighed and wandered away as Boa’s name was called. “I should probably do more sit-ups,” he muttered to himself as she went to the stage. Jaejoong turned back to realize he and Junsu were alone—in a matter of speaking.
“Micky’s vocals were really good. Think I’ll do okay?” Junsu asked. “I’m horrible at acting.”
“I’m sure you’ll do fine,” Jaejoong encouraged him. Maybe this was the reason Junsu had decided to quit his job.
Junsu nodded, twitching nervously as he shifted his weight from foot to foot and touched his hair self-consciously. Jaejoong bit his lip to keep from laughing as he found the habits sort of cute.
“Want some incentive?” Jaejoong asked.
“Incentive?” Junsu raised a curious eyebrow.
Jaejoong moved close to whisper in his ear. “If you win the lead role, I’ll take you out for dinner.” He could have sworn he felt Junsu shiver.
“Deal.” Junsu grinned. He leaned closer, about to kiss Jaejoong when he hesitated and they both realized where they were. Jaejoong chuckled quietly as Junsu joined him. Going on a date seemed like an excuse now, but anything to spend time with Junsu, he told himself. Jaejoong glanced to the side when Junsu’s name was called and he leaned closer to kiss his cheek.
“Break a leg,” he murmured.
Junsu just grinned, glowing from the support and made his way to the stage as Boa approached.
“You didn’t hear me, did you?” she asked as Jaejoong tilted his head bewildered. “Never mind,” she said with a grin and pushed Jaejoong down into one of the chairs. “You’re going to love this.”
There was nothing quite like Junsu singing, Jaejoong realized. When Micky sang, it was soulful, his husky voice lending a feeling to the music that evoked your deepest emotions and helped you understand how he felt. Junsu’s voice was completely different. His voice was at a higher pitch and he hit. every. damn. note. It was like a lightning bolt to the chest how talented he was, as the way he elaborated and held notes blew Jaejoong, and most of the students away. There were a good many cheers by the time Junsu was finished and he exited the stage with one of the biggest smiles Jaejoong had ever seen.
The two congratulated him quietly as he joined them and tugged him to sit down as they waited through a few more auditions. Jaejoong nudged Junsu after one girl stopped her screeching and they began to pack up their things to abandon Boa and sneak out. Once outside the double doors, Jaejoong laid a happy kiss on Junsu to congratulate him.
“Are you sure I deserve that? I mean, I haven’t gotten the lead role yet,” he murmured with a grin.
“Ah, maybe you’re right,” Jaejoong teased and pulled away only to be pinned back against the wall as Junsu stole another lingering kiss.
This, Jaejoong thought as his stomach fluttered from the feel of Junsu’s lips on his. This was how he wanted to feel all the time.
Good thing he had Junsu to help him with that.

The moment Jaejoong handed the framed photograph to Junsu, he realized that midterms were upon them.
Jaejoong and Junsu hadn’t one spare moment to see one another while they studied, but texting kept them sane. Especially when Jaejoong needed a break and was sick of staring at art vocabulary. While he didn’t have any essay tests for his art classes, his professors decided to have tests on the material studied for previous assignments. This was considered cruel by some students who lobbied for a more difficult project to be due because they’d rather be doing art than reading. Jaejoong found memorizing terms a lot easier than he thought, but staring at books bored the hell out of him.
It wasn’t really the studying that took it out of him though. Work was getting geared up for the holidays. Friday was Halloween and then they would have to amp it up to get ready for the slam they would feel as holidays drew nearer. There was always an influx of people at their store during the holidays, wanting to buy art supplies as gifts for relatives and especially to get special pictures and art framed. Jaejoong had agreed to come in a few extra days that week to help out moving stock around and getting everything ready for the holidays. He would be in one of the busiest sections of the store and they wanted to make sure everything was in the right spot for them to find and waste less time. Jaejoong was thankful when the week was finally over.
It seemed all of the university students were thanking some god by the end of Friday. Halloween had been a spectacular way to end the week of midterms and Jaejoong thoroughly enjoyed taking pictures of everyone in their costumes. He hadn’t seen Junsu yet though, and the young man had never mentioned if he was dressing up or not.
“Cast list goes up today.”
Jaejoong glanced up as Boa walked past to sit next to him. “Did you check it yet?”
She shook her head. “It’s not on the bulletin board yet.”
Jaejoong looked her up and down. “What made you want to dress as Dorothy?”
Boa smirked, her eyes twinkling with mischievousness. “You should see Yunho.”
He frowned in curiosity and figured he’d see the dancer soon enough. Jaejoong had decided to be lazy and borrowed black ears and a tail from his sister. Not only had this been considered a costume, but lots of girls (and guys who knew him better) said it suited him and took pictures. Go figure. Once class was finished, and their midterm with it, Jaejoong accompanied Boa down to the drama department to see that the cast list was finally up as people gathered around. He wished her luck as she trotted over to see what she’d gotten.
A hand wrapped around his and Jaejoong looked over in surprise to see Junsu. “Come with me?” he asked.
“All right.” Jaejoong let Junsu lead him over to the cast board. He squeezed Junsu’s hand as the young man slipped into the crowd to get close enough to the board to read the list.
Junsu’s eyes went wide as everyone around him began to clap and congratulate him. Jaejoong assumed he’d gotten a very coveted part and grinned. He waited as everyone patted Junsu’s shoulders and wished him luck. He turned back to Jaejoong as they retreated, their hands still linked.
“I got the lead,” he breathed in shock and Jaejoong blinked in surprise.
“T-that’s great!” Jaejoong replied finally with a grin and pulled Junsu into a hug. “Congratulations!”
Junsu laughed and hugged back tightly. “I’m a little scared,” he admitted as they pulled apart. “I’ve never done anything really like this, and the only reason I tried so hard was because you said you’d take me out to dinner. This is all your fault.”
Jaejoong glanced away as he smiled and felt his face heat. “I’m sure you’ll be great. You know, once you get some advice from the director and others. I bet Micky will have some great pointers for you… What the hell… is that Yunho?” He stared in bewilderment at the lion growling at the other students as they laughed at him holding Boa-Dorothy protectively.
Junsu laughed. “Yeah, he made me help him with the makeup.”
“Huh,” was all Jaejoong could think to reply. “He doesn’t look so cowardly.”
That was the moment he realized he and Junsu were holding one another and he finally let go as Junsu moved back awkwardly and scratched his head with a smile. No, that’s not what he wanted to do, Jaejoong decided as he felt that fluttering feeling in his chest again. He should be congratulating Junsu, not pulling away. That was when he noticed Junsu’s ‘costume’ and leaned to the side to see a tail peeking out from behind Junsu, and the little ears in his hair.
“A fox?” he asked with a grin as Junsu nodded happily. “It suits you.” He winked.
“Thanks.” Junsu smirked. “I like yours too.”
Jaejoong thanked him and decided that he’d rather have this conversation away from everyone else. He reached out and took Junsu’s hand again to tug him around the corner of the hallway.
“I believe I owe you something,” he said with a devious smile as Junsu grinned in reply as he followed. Once they were hidden from the view of the others, Jaejoong pulled Junsu close for a kiss that lasted a lot longer than he meant it to. It finally broke when they both smiled and Junsu nuzzled Jaejoong’s nose.
“So I get dinner, right?” he fished and Jaejoong laughed.
He could only manage a grin before Junsu up and stole another kiss. And another. And Jaejoong couldn’t find it in him to make Junsu stop. Finally, they paused for air and Jaejoong tried not to laugh as they caught their breath. Jaejoong jerked back suddenly as a thought hit him.
“What is it?” Junsu asked as Jaejoong let him go to rifle through his bag.
“I have the model release for you to sign…” he replied as he glanced around. “Here.” He pointed at a bench in the hallway and set the paper down with a pen. “It’s so I can use your pictures legally, blah, blah, blah, I can sell them if I want—not that I would, mind you.” He could see Junsu grinning as he looked over the paper. “I’ll be right back,” he told the athlete and ran to catch Dorothy.
Once Jaejoong had Boa’s consent to be his model, he had her sign one of the papers and dragged her back to Junsu. The three discussed when they were free and after fretting over schedules with the play, they penciled in a day a few weeks later to get together to do the shoot. Jaejoong was ecstatic and thanked both of them for helping him out.
“You really like this photography stuff, don’t you?” she asked.
“This project is the big one,” he explained. “Mrs. Olson wants us to learn about film, so next week, she’s teaching us all the fundamentals of how it works, then she’s going to show us how to develop the film and photographs ourselves.” He paused as they hummed in understanding. “She’s going to provide the black and white film, and cameras if we don’t have them, and then we have to do a photo shoot with them.”
“Black and white should be nice for the ideas you came up with,” Junsu said as he nodded.
“Sounds like fun. I can’t wait to see how this turns out,” she said as Yunho called. “I’ll see you two later, kay?” she waved and ran off as Jaejoong accepted the signed paper back from Junsu.
“You’re going to sell a calendar of me so we can die rich, right?” Junsu teased as Jaejoong laughed.
“The thought hadn’t occurred to me, but that sounds like an excellent plan. You do have quite adoring fans,” Jaejoong replied as he put a finger to his lips thoughtfully.
“There’s only one adoring fan I care about,” Junsu said softly as he stood and pulled Jaejoong close.
And Jaejoong didn’t doubt him.

so last night i watched Star Trek and Up instead of writing. i don't think i've ever cried so much at the beginning of a movie as i did for Up. so good~

This, Jaejoong thought as his stomach fluttered from the feel of Junsu’s lips on his. This was how he wanted to feel all the time.
Good thing he had Junsu to help him with that.

The moment Jaejoong handed the framed photograph to Junsu, he realized that midterms were upon them.
Jaejoong and Junsu hadn’t one spare moment to see one another while they studied, but texting kept them sane. Especially when Jaejoong needed a break and was sick of staring at art vocabulary. While he didn’t have any essay tests for his art classes, his professors decided to have tests on the material studied for previous assignments. This was considered cruel by some students who lobbied for a more difficult project to be due because they’d rather be doing art than reading. Jaejoong found memorizing terms a lot easier than he thought, but staring at books bored the hell out of him.
It wasn’t really the studying that took it out of him though. Work was getting geared up for the holidays. Friday was Halloween and then they would have to amp it up to get ready for the slam they would feel as holidays drew nearer. There was always an influx of people at their store during the holidays, wanting to buy art supplies as gifts for relatives and especially to get special pictures and art framed. Jaejoong had agreed to come in a few extra days that week to help out moving stock around and getting everything ready for the holidays. He would be in one of the busiest sections of the store and they wanted to make sure everything was in the right spot for them to find and waste less time. Jaejoong was thankful when the week was finally over.
It seemed all of the university students were thanking some god by the end of Friday. Halloween had been a spectacular way to end the week of midterms and Jaejoong thoroughly enjoyed taking pictures of everyone in their costumes. He hadn’t seen Junsu yet though, and the young man had never mentioned if he was dressing up or not.
“Cast list goes up today.”
Jaejoong glanced up as Boa walked past to sit next to him. “Did you check it yet?”
She shook her head. “It’s not on the bulletin board yet.”
Jaejoong looked her up and down. “What made you want to dress as Dorothy?”
Boa smirked, her eyes twinkling with mischievousness. “You should see Yunho.”
He frowned in curiosity and figured he’d see the dancer soon enough. Jaejoong had decided to be lazy and borrowed black ears and a tail from his sister. Not only had this been considered a costume, but lots of girls (and guys who knew him better) said it suited him and took pictures. Go figure. Once class was finished, and their midterm with it, Jaejoong accompanied Boa down to the drama department to see that the cast list was finally up as people gathered around. He wished her luck as she trotted over to see what she’d gotten.
A hand wrapped around his and Jaejoong looked over in surprise to see Junsu. “Come with me?” he asked.
“All right.” Jaejoong let Junsu lead him over to the cast board. He squeezed Junsu’s hand as the young man slipped into the crowd to get close enough to the board to read the list.
Junsu’s eyes went wide as everyone around him began to clap and congratulate him. Jaejoong assumed he’d gotten a very coveted part and grinned. He waited as everyone patted Junsu’s shoulders and wished him luck. He turned back to Jaejoong as they retreated, their hands still linked.
“I got the lead,” he breathed in shock and Jaejoong blinked in surprise.
“T-that’s great!” Jaejoong replied finally with a grin and pulled Junsu into a hug. “Congratulations!”
Junsu laughed and hugged back tightly. “I’m a little scared,” he admitted as they pulled apart. “I’ve never done anything really like this, and the only reason I tried so hard was because you said you’d take me out to dinner. This is all your fault.”
Jaejoong glanced away as he smiled and felt his face heat. “I’m sure you’ll be great. You know, once you get some advice from the director and others. I bet Micky will have some great pointers for you… What the hell… is that Yunho?” He stared in bewilderment at the lion growling at the other students as they laughed at him holding Boa-Dorothy protectively.
Junsu laughed. “Yeah, he made me help him with the makeup.”
“Huh,” was all Jaejoong could think to reply. “He doesn’t look so cowardly.”
That was the moment he realized he and Junsu were holding one another and he finally let go as Junsu moved back awkwardly and scratched his head with a smile. No, that’s not what he wanted to do, Jaejoong decided as he felt that fluttering feeling in his chest again. He should be congratulating Junsu, not pulling away. That was when he noticed Junsu’s ‘costume’ and leaned to the side to see a tail peeking out from behind Junsu, and the little ears in his hair.
“A fox?” he asked with a grin as Junsu nodded happily. “It suits you.” He winked.
“Thanks.” Junsu smirked. “I like yours too.”
Jaejoong thanked him and decided that he’d rather have this conversation away from everyone else. He reached out and took Junsu’s hand again to tug him around the corner of the hallway.
“I believe I owe you something,” he said with a devious smile as Junsu grinned in reply as he followed. Once they were hidden from the view of the others, Jaejoong pulled Junsu close for a kiss that lasted a lot longer than he meant it to. It finally broke when they both smiled and Junsu nuzzled Jaejoong’s nose.
“So I get dinner, right?” he fished and Jaejoong laughed.
He could only manage a grin before Junsu up and stole another kiss. And another. And Jaejoong couldn’t find it in him to make Junsu stop. Finally, they paused for air and Jaejoong tried not to laugh as they caught their breath. Jaejoong jerked back suddenly as a thought hit him.
“What is it?” Junsu asked as Jaejoong let him go to rifle through his bag.
“I have the model release for you to sign…” he replied as he glanced around. “Here.” He pointed at a bench in the hallway and set the paper down with a pen. “It’s so I can use your pictures legally, blah, blah, blah, I can sell them if I want—not that I would, mind you.” He could see Junsu grinning as he looked over the paper. “I’ll be right back,” he told the athlete and ran to catch Dorothy.
Once Jaejoong had Boa’s consent to be his model, he had her sign one of the papers and dragged her back to Junsu. The three discussed when they were free and after fretting over schedules with the play, they penciled in a day a few weeks later to get together to do the shoot. Jaejoong was ecstatic and thanked both of them for helping him out.
“You really like this photography stuff, don’t you?” she asked.
“This project is the big one,” he explained. “Mrs. Olson wants us to learn about film, so next week, she’s teaching us all the fundamentals of how it works, then she’s going to show us how to develop the film and photographs ourselves.” He paused as they hummed in understanding. “She’s going to provide the black and white film, and cameras if we don’t have them, and then we have to do a photo shoot with them.”
“Black and white should be nice for the ideas you came up with,” Junsu said as he nodded.
“Sounds like fun. I can’t wait to see how this turns out,” she said as Yunho called. “I’ll see you two later, kay?” she waved and ran off as Jaejoong accepted the signed paper back from Junsu.
“You’re going to sell a calendar of me so we can die rich, right?” Junsu teased as Jaejoong laughed.
“The thought hadn’t occurred to me, but that sounds like an excellent plan. You do have quite adoring fans,” Jaejoong replied as he put a finger to his lips thoughtfully.
“There’s only one adoring fan I care about,” Junsu said softly as he stood and pulled Jaejoong close.
And Jaejoong didn’t doubt him.

so last night i watched Star Trek and Up instead of writing. i don't think i've ever cried so much at the beginning of a movie as i did for Up. so good~
