14: So
Jae tossed his bag on the counter and opened the freezer as Hyebin offered to make their new guest some tea. The vampire accepted graciously before Yunho’s father pulled her away and whispered in her ear. Jae glanced over when her eyes got big and she stared at Micky in disbelief as he silently took a chair at the table.
“He is,” Yunho muttered as Hyebin sputtered.
“Are you serious!?” she stared at her brother. “But then—”
“I’m the pack leader,” he interrupted as her jaw dropped. Jae ignored the exchange and fished through the goods in the freezer for some vegetables.
“That’s impossible!” She opened her mouth to say more but was again cut off.
“God, I don’t have time for this!” Yunho snarled and stomped into the guest room. Jae rolled his eyes and apologized to Hyebin before he followed his lover.
“Was that really necessary?” Jae hissed as he held out a bag of frozen peas for Yunho’s jaw, red from the punch Micky had landed.
“Are you kidding?” Yunho snapped loudly from where he sat on the bed. “I told him I’d tear him apart if he hurt you.”
“What are you talking about?” Jae growled, angry that Yunho skirted around how he’d acted toward his sister. “He didn’t even touch me.”
“He left you!” Yunho replied as his voice pitched down into hurt and Jae realized what he meant. “He hurt you in a way that will never heal,” he murmured. Jae felt his chest contract at the memories and reached out as Yunho leaned forward to bury his face against his stomach. Jae rested his arms on his lover’s shoulders and he squeezed a little.
“Don’t worry,” Jae whispered softly. “The wounds are healed, but it was worth it for the one who did the healing.” He watched with a smile as Yunho’s arms wrapped around his waist and pulled him close. He slipped down in those arms, kneeling to get down to Yunho’s level and pressed a kiss to the wolf’s lips before they hugged tightly. There was no going back when this was right here in front of him, keeping him warm and grateful.
“Remember what I said,” he said as he tilted Yunho’s face up.
“I do.” Yunho nodded and Jae pressed another kiss to his lips. They’d made a commitment, and unless they agreed otherwise, this relationship was monogamous. Much as it made him wonder if Changmin and Junsu were anywhere near.
Jae finally coaxed Yunho off of the bed after a few more words and dragged him out to the kitchen where Micky sat at the table. Yunho’s father was handing him a cup of tea when they walked in and Micky took it with a thank you before he nodded to them. His expression told Jae he wanted to say a million things, but he didn’t exactly know what to say first. The feeling Jae saw the most was pain, that much was obvious. He wondered if it was because they could see each other again, or if it was something else. Handing the frozen peas to Yunho finally, he turned and opened his mouth, but never got to ask because Hyebin peeked her head into the kitchen and said two more had arrived.
Bewildered, Jae asked, “Two more?” He was answered when two more vampires walked into the room—Changmin and Junsu.
“Oh my god!” and “You’re alive!!” assaulted his ears simultaneously as the two practically tackled him into the kitchen counter with hugs. Jae patted their backs and assured them he was fine as they babbled at him and he looked to Yunho who shrugged in bewilderment as he held the peas to his face. Once Jae had them calmed down enough to get them to sit down at the table, he set tea in front of them to keep from getting pounced on again.
“Alive?” he asked finally as they looked at each other sheepishly.
“We thought you were dead!” Junsu said as Changmin nodded. Micky did nothing but stare at his cup.
“Well, tell me why I’m supposedly dead,” he said as he noticed a slight wince from Micky. “I mean, I’m not dead, right?” He glanced at Yunho. “Right?”
“You’re very real, I promise,” Yunho assured him. Jae looked over as the vampires at the table went silent and Jae worried what was coming.
“I was checking up on you,” Junsu replied quietly as he rested his hands around the tea cup carefully. He took a breath and looked as if he was about to go on but hesitated.
Jae wasn’t at all surprised to hear that they checked up on him to make sure he was okay. They obviously still cared about him quite a bit if they did that from where they were. He wondered what Junsu saw that made him think such a thing as Jae being dead. Changmin took one of Junsu’s hands then and squeezed. It seemed the gesture gave Junsu the ability to go on.
“I was using my sight to make sure you were okay, but sometimes it’s spotty. The times when you were around Yunho, or touching him were the moments where I couldn’t see much or anything at all. I think it was because I couldn’t see anything from him to begin with.”
“No one could,” Changmin agreed as Jae tilted his head curiously at this fact. He’d known about Micky unable to sense Yunho, but not the rest.
“I saw you jump off of a cliff,” Junsu broke off and took a sip of his tea, maybe to cover up how it had affected him. “After that, I couldn’t see anything and I thought…” he trailed off and looked up at Jae. “I really thought you died! That you might have…” He looked away as Jae was horrified by the idea that they thought they’d seen his death.
“You thought I committed suicide?” he asked bluntly and put a hand to his face when they nodded. What did they think he was, some crazy, obsessed girl? “Of all the stupid…”
“Sorry,” Junsu shrank down and Jae realized he’d insulted the poor vampire.
“No, it’s okay.” He tried to reassure the vampire. “You just misinterpreted it, Junsu,” Jae explained as he squeezed the vampire’s shoulder. “Yunho and I went cliff diving a month or so ago.”
“But, then why wouldn’t I be able to see you after that?” Junsu asked worried.
“Well,” Jae felt a blush working into his cheeks, “that was the day Yunho and I became… official,” he told them softly and wondered if that was the reason, since Yunho didn’t exist to them.
“That doesn’t explain why we can feel him now and not you,” Changmin blurted out.
“What?” Jae and Yunho both said in surprise.
“We couldn’t sense him at all before, but now we can sense and use our powers on him while you are the one who doesn’t exist to us,” Changmin explained as Jae frowned in confusion.
“That doesn’t make any sense,” he replied as he wondered if whatever protected Yunho had passed to him. He looked to his lover to see him shrug in just as much confusion. Jae looked to Micky who just stared into his tea cup before he lifted it to sip at it. He hadn’t said so much as a word since they’d walked into the house. Jae didn’t blame him—what was he supposed to say?
“Nothing makes sense right now,” Changmin held his head. Who knew what kind of emotions were bombarding him from everyone in the house.
“You can’t hear me either?” It stung when Micky refused to look up, determined to stare at his tea, not wanting to hear or answer.
“Yoochun… stopped using his power after he saw—well, thought he saw—your death in my mind,” Junsu explained, glancing back and forth between them as if he wondered if he was saying the right thing.
Jae waited patiently for Micky to say something—anything. The normally talkative flirtatiousness was missing and it scared him. There was something very wrong with this picture.
Micky stood suddenly, his cold eyes staring straight into Jae. “It wasn’t right to come here. We should go.”
Jae felt like he’d been punched in the gut as both Changmin and Junsu began to protest loudly. They were cut off when Yunho grabbed Micky’s arm, his grip tight enough to make the vampire wince. Or had the wolf’s strong feelings and thoughts penetrated the block on his power to cause the pain?
“You answer him,” Yunho growled. When Micky looked away in refusal, Yunho tightened his grip to make the vampire wince again and grab his arm. Angry silver flashed around Micky’s eyes and Yunho grimaced under the pressure of the power as they glared at one another. This was getting them nowhere.
“Stop it!” Jae snapped and the tension disappeared immediately as their attention shifted to him. He sighed, his annoyance taking over as he stepped up to take hold of Micky’s arm and pull Yunho’s hand off. “You and I will talk,” he growled at the vampire, his grip and openly angry glare got the point across—he wasn’t going to take this bullshit anymore. It was too bad he hadn’t taken the drug or he might have taken the time to beat Micky senseless for his behavior.
He expected resistance, but he didn’t have to drag the vampire. Whatever fight he’d had left faded and Jae led the way as Micky followed along placidly. Jae led him outside and onto a path that took them into the forest. They walked in silence for some time until Jae was satisfied with the space between them and the house. He finally slowed to a stop when he saw a log they could sit on, but he wasn’t sure if he should let go of Micky in case the vampire chickened out.
“I won’t run,” Micky murmured softly when Jae hesitated. “I promise.”
Jae loosened his grip with uncertainty and finally let his hand drop. “You’re hiding something.” He knew he was right when he heard the almost inaudible intake of breath. “What is it?” He could see the pain in Micky’s eyes when he turned. “Tell me. Please?”
“I shouldn’t.” It sounded like he was pleading. What right did he have to plead?
“Cut the crap and just tell me!” Jae snapped as he lost his temper, his voice echoing off the trees. “I’m sick of being treated like a pathetic human! Treat me the way you used to treat me, like your equal.” This time he was pleading. “I’m not as weak as you think I am!”
“That’s just it! You are!” Micky retorted before he could stop himself. He glanced away embarrassed at the outburst before he sighed. “Fine, I just…” Another sigh.
Jae waited patiently as Micky made a few more false starts mixed with grumbling and exasperated sighs. If he’d been reading this in a book, he might find it rather amusing, but as he was watching his angry ex-lover trying to find words, he held his laughter—and temper—in check and waited.
“I haven’t used my power since… since I saw you…” Micky’s gaze settled on him then and all other thoughts left him when he saw the fear in the vampire’s eyes. His chest tightened as he worried about what he would hear next. “I thought you were dead.”
There was silence, so Jae took the moment to reply. “You haven’t used it? Not at all?” he asked, surprised when Micky shook his head.
“Junsu—he knew how I would react, so he didn’t tell me.” Micky sounded angry for a split second before the pitch turned up a little in fear. “I did something that reminded him of you. He thought of you and what had happened—and then I saw—and… and at first I didn’t believe it. I demanded to know why he would think such a thing and if it was real. I didn’t think you would jump off a cliff, but he swore it was real and…” he paused in his ramble as tears threatened to escape. “I searched for you, but I couldn’t find your presence anywhere. And then I just couldn’t… couldn’t do it anymore…” He bit his quivering lip as the tears slid down his cheeks.
Jae stood rooted to his spot. He’d never seen Micky like this before—ever. He didn’t know what to say. That his life—or death in this case—moved Micky this much shocked him.
“So, I finally decided to come and confirm your death and to talk to Yunho,” He paused to catch Jae’s gaze. “And then there you were!” Micky laughed hysterically, tears still falling. “I couldn’t believe it was you. I couldn’t believe you were alive and real. I didn’t know what to think…” He was sobbing openly now and Jae’s body reacted without even an order from his brain. He pulled the vampire into a tight hug as he blinked away his own tears. He really shouldn’t have, but he couldn’t stop himself, not with the way Micky’s walls had come crumbling down right in front of him. Micky’s body shook with sobs and Jae wondered if he’d even let himself cry when he had seen Jae’s supposed death.
“I’m here,” he whispered. “I’m real.” Somehow he knew how it felt—the way he had felt when Micky left. Jae knew his angry side was yelling that he shouldn’t be comforting the person who left him, but somehow he knew their fates were entwined again. He wasn’t going to ignore that just because he was angry. He could find the strength to forgive if Micky asked for it—and worked for it.
He waited until Micky quieted before shifting them to sit on the log. He rubbed Micky’s back lightly as the vampire got a hold of himself and wiped his face.
“I came back because I thought it was my fault,” Micky finally explained as he stared at the forest floor. “I thought you’d jumped because of me and that it was my job to come back and apologize. And well, make sure you were really dead.” He smiled a little then and glanced over. “I’m glad you’re not.”
“I’m sorry I yelled at you,” Jae said softly.
Micky shook his head. “It’s my fault. I’m sorry I acted like you meant nothing to me. Your death shook me a lot more than I thought it would. My feelings for you surprised even me. ” He glanced up to catch Jae’s gaze. “I betrayed you and that’s unacceptable. Can you forgive me?”
Jae nodded and pulled Micky into a tight embrace as tears stung his eyes again. “I forgive you. You thought you were doing what was right.”
“Nothing is foolproof,” Micky murmured as they pulled back. “Especially when we’re both fools,” he said with a chuckle.
Jae smiled a little. “We’re all of us fools.” They lapsed into a comfortable silence until Jae remembered something. “You can’t sense me either?”
“Actually, I haven’t tried,” Micky admitted softly.
“Well, try now,” Jae suggested hopeful.
Micky smiled a little. “I can do it again, but I’m not really sure it’s my place to try and read your mind now.”
Jae knew exactly what Micky meant and felt his face heat as he thought of Yunho.
“Your hair threw me off,” the vampire said as Jae raised an eyebrow. “The blonde.” He pointed as the young man chuckled.
“Pretty bright, isn’t it?” Jae grinned and tugged at his light, spiked hair. “Yunho and I redid the roots recently.”
“Looks good,” he commented with a smile. “I thought you were some spirit at first.”
“Thanks, I think?” Jae replied with a laugh. He hesitated before he decided to ask, “Will you be staying now?”
“I… I don’t know,” Micky replied honestly. “I don’t know what we should do next.”
The voice that spoke next was not one they knew.
“How about put up your guard, Micky?”
They both turned in surprise to see a man with messily spiked brown hair staring down at them, his knife an inch from Jae’s nose. Jae didn’t bother fighting when he felt Micky’s arms around him and found himself ten feet away, behind the vampire. Micky squeezed the hand he still held and Jae squeezed back as he realized he didn’t have the pack with the vials. He bit back a curse and kept his eyes on the other vampire.
“So you are Micky,” the man surmised as he flipped his blade with a wicked grin that showed his long canines. “We knew if we watched, you’d finally return. It was a touching reunion.”
Jae scowled as he pulled a gun out with his free hand and switched the safety off as he heard Micky growl. He waited as the other vampire’s expression darkened and he changed position as he brought up his guard. Now he was going to take it seriously.
“The big pine,” Micky muttered loud enough for Jae to hear and glance to his left at it. The vampire’s hand disappeared from his and Micky vanished from his spot as the two vampires moved to clash. Jae could barely keep up as they fought, catching them in his sight only as they hit one another before they moved away. He crept his way to the pine with his gun at the ready, and grimaced when Micky finally pinned the vampire against the trunk, a knife held against his throat. Jae’s two handed aim was centered on the trapped vampire’s head.
The two said nothing as the vampire struggled and swore at them. Micky was the stronger and kept his cool as he held the vampire against the tree.
“Working with a human,” the vampire snarled and spat on Jae’s shoes.
“Daniel.” Micky stated it, not asked. He must have plucked the name from the vampire’s mind because the other’s eyes widened in surprise. Even Jae was surprised by Micky’s use of his power again. “Gutsy to come after us by yourself.”
“I was supposed to scout, but I figured I’d get a reward if I took care of you by myself.” He smirked then. “Because I’m not without my own tricks,” he drawled as Jae saw his irises turn as black as the pupils of his eyes. Jae took an involuntary step back as he watched Micky’s eyes change as well.
“J-Jae?” Micky asked hesitantly as he kept the same hold on the vampire.
“Yeah?” he asked with his aim still on Daniel’s head.
“He’s an illusion type,” his voice twisted painfully as his lips did the same. “Stop it,” he snapped at Daniel.
“What are you doing?” Jae demanded as he stepped closer this time.
“Oh, nothing,” Daniel singsonged as his black eyes flicked to Jae. “Just showing you in my place.” Jae wanted to shoot the disgusting grin off his face and pressed the gun against the vampire’s cheek. “Ah ah ah!” he warned. “You kill me now, and you’ll regret it. The mental link will pull him with me.”
“Just kill him, Jae,” Micky advised.
“A wise choice,” the vampire replied. “But, you have no way to free him now,” he told Jae.
Jae’s lips twisted in a silent snarl. Now what was he supposed to do? He could see Micky sweating from what he was seeing. He didn’t even know vampires could sweat. It must have been bad when his friend whimpered in pain, but Jae kept his stance to hold the other vampire trapped.
“It was foolish of you to get closer,” Daniel interrupted his thoughts as the vampire’s eyes caught his gaze. “All I need is physical contact.” His hand gripped Jae’s arm before he could even move and Jae winced as he waited, but nothing happened. Daniel frowned as he looked from his hand, to Jae’s eyes and back again as Jae stared in confusion. The vampire cursed and pulled him closer, his eyes searching Jae up and down. “What’s protecting you?!” he demanded before his eyes focused at Jae’s neck. “This?”
Jae wrenched himself back and free from the vampire’s grip, his aim still on the vampire’s head as he stayed outside of his range. He reached up to touch his neck and feel Yunho’s necklace. This was protecting him?
“Yes, that,” the vampire frowned and tried to move, but Micky held strong. “You’re persistent,” he turned his attention to Micky and concentrated.
Micky whimpered as tears began to slip down his cheeks again. “Jae…”
He had no idea what his friend was seeing, but if it was enough to make him cry… He had to do something fast or Micky would eventually lose the battle and they’d both die. If the vampire’s power was of the mind… then his own shields would protect him, and the necklace could protect Micky! The way Kumi said she had to track Yunho to get to him—how could he have missed that? Everything made sense now! Jae kept scowling at Daniel as he quietly built his shields up, reinforcing them as much as he could as he wanted to make the vampire think he was trying to come up with something. He hoped this would work.
“Just a little more…” Daniel muttered, his focus on Micky who growled as Jae switched to his other gun—the one with the solid silver bullets.
The gunshot echoed in the silence as the vampire screamed in pain and Jae moved. “You shot me!” Daniel screamed at him and tried to look down at his arm but the blade at his neck kept him from doing so. He was too angry to notice Jae move. The young man ripped the necklace off and tied it around Micky’s neck as fast as he could. He then held his gun up at Daniel’s forehead over Micky’s shoulder. He could see the tension melting away from Micky as he took a deep breath and held the other vampire with renewed strength.
“Thank you,” he said gratefully as Daniel snarled at them. “Now, where were we?”
The vampire roared in anger and Jae felt himself flying backwards before he hit the ground, crashing into fallen branches. Micky hit the ground right in front of him, but was on his feet before Jae could even blink. Jae struggled to his knees as he watched the two vampires spar against one another—Daniel grabbing for the pendant as Micky defended and kept his hands away. He wouldn’t be able to do it forever. Jae switched his guns again as he decided on the one loaded with the liquid bullets. He’d hoped they could question the vampire, but his power was too dangerous. If only Jae could get off a clear shot. He wondered if Micky could hear him despite the necklace being on and silently sent his idea through his shields.
When they broke apart, Micky glanced over and nodded ever so slightly. He could hear Jae! They would only have one shot at this. If they missed, Daniel would get his hands on the necklace. Jae adjusted his grip on the gun as he saw Micky’s knife appear again. But the other vampire had ideas of his own. Jae was suddenly wrenched to his feet, his own hand holding the gun to his head as he knew who was behind him. Without even thinking, he wrenched forward and his hand out of Daniel’s just enough to give him control of the gun. That’s when Micky disappeared from his view and he heard a gasp of pain.
The three of them went tumbling to the ground as Jae pulled himself free of the arms. He hit the dirt and rolled over as he saw Micky struggling to keep the vampire still, Daniel screaming in anger as he reached back to pull the pendant from Micky’s neck. Jae didn’t even think. He brought the gun up, lined up the shot and pulled the trigger.
He heard the echo and the dull thud in the dirt.
Then silence.
He panted as he stared in shock at the bullet hole in the vampire’s forehead oozing blood with silver flecks in it. Micky grunted as he pushed himself up on his knees to pull his knife out of the other vampire’s back. When his gaze caught Jae’s, relief flooded through Jae and he sagged to the ground, extremely grateful for Kumi’s training. He’d had the cool to take his time and get the shot right the first time around.
“You did it,” Micky breathed and scrambled over. Jae felt himself being pulled into a tight hug and decided it wouldn’t be so bad to hug back, even if his energy had fled him. “I can’t believe it!”
“I’m not inept,” Jae muttered as Micky pulled back.
“But your idea saved us. Both times! I’m a little put out that you moved while the gun was to your head, but I’m proud of you!” The approval in his smile made Jae’s stomach flutter with pride. Or was that nausea from killing someone? In any case, he’d won respect and that helped settle his stomach. Jae just smiled, unable to articulate how he felt with words. There were too many feelings to even start to express.
“Oi!” a voice called as Jae turned to see several bodies moving toward them. The first to appear was Aaron, followed closely by Yunho. Two others brought up the rear still in their wolf form. Jae snatched his necklace off Micky before they could see and tied it back on.
“What is that?” Micky whispered as they stood.
Jae still felt shaky from the fight, weak after the adrenaline left him, and held Micky’s arm to steady himself. “A gift,” was all he said as the others approached.
“Hey, we thought it was Micky at first, but then we realized there was another with you,” Aaron told him as they came up and Yunho held out the bag Jae had forgotten.
“Reckless,” he said softly as Jae turned red and took the bag, hooking it over his shoulder. “At least you had the guns. I’m glad you’re both okay.” Yunho pulled him into a hug and Jae was glad for the steadiness and warmth.
“He killed the vampire,” Micky told them as he approached and Yunho let go.
“We killed him,” Jae corrected. “I just managed to shoot him in the head.”
“Did you punch him yet?” Aaron pointed at Micky as he looked at Yunho, who nodded. “Aw man, I wanted a shot.”
Jae’s eyes narrowed. “I think I should have been the one to do the honor,” he replied, knowing exactly what they were talking about.
“Can we stop talking about the vampire like he’s not here?” Micky grumbled annoyed.
“Did you get to talk?” Yunho asked as Jae nodded. “Productive?”
“Yes,” Jae answered and glanced at Micky who nodded in reply.
“Are you guys going to stay?” Yunho asked and Jae could have sworn his eyes looked hopeful for a split-second, but that might have been wishful thinking.
The vampire opened his mouth as if to answer then hesitated. “I’ll have to talk it over with Changmin and Junsu. We’re the only ones here, but I’d like to stay for the time being.”
Jae knew he had no right to be disappointed, but he wanted the three to stay. He felt a little better when Yunho’s hand rubbed his lower back lightly. Yunho knew how he was feeling. Then again, Yunho didn’t really know he was reeling from Micky’s confession about how he felt when he thought Jae had died.
“We should all sit down and talk,” Yunho said quietly then, as if to echo Jae’s next thought. The pack leader turned as he motioned for everyone to follow and the guys all fell in as they made their way back. Jae was second to last with Yunho before him and Micky behind him. He felt odd being between them, and yet there was a feeling that it somehow felt right. He wondered if Yunho and Micky would ever truly like one another.
As they walked, Jae touched the cool pendant lying against his skin. So this had been protecting his mind the whole time he wore it and he hadn’t known at all. Just how powerful was this thing? He didn’t know how to tell Yunho, nor how he could possibly give it back, no matter how much he wanted the wolf to be wearing it. Jae had natural shields against vampires, but Yunho might need the protection, especially with Micky tending to pry into other peoples’ minds. He might have agreed not to read Jae’s mind on principle, but that didn’t mean he’d given up on reading Yunho’s mind now it was open for perusal. Maybe he could make the vampire promise in some way.
“So,” Jae turned so he could glance back at the vampire as he walked. “How do you feel? Better?”
“Yeah,” Micky smiled a little. “I know it’s probably weird, but you know what? It feels like I’m home.”

14: So
Jae tossed his bag on the counter and opened the freezer as Hyebin offered to make their new guest some tea.

Just curious...this Daniel vampire said he is scouting around...so this means the main vampire group is nearby and there will be more to come...if it is...then those boys have to be on alert now.
