Interlude: Call Me Irresponsible

“That’s it, I’ve had it.” Changmin yelled and kicked both Jae and Micky off of him. Jae stared at the vampire in shock from his position on the floor as Micky sat up rubbing his head.

“What the hell man, I thought you wanted to get over this!” Micky grumbled.

“I can’t take this anymore,” Changmin said angrily as he tugged angrily against the chains, making them rattle against the headboard. “Take the cuffs off!”

“No way!” Micky growled back. “You have to get over your fears!”

“Screw this,” the taller vampire snarled and rolled his body, making the bed fall to the side with a loud thump, making the floor shake as he got his feet on the floor. Jae couldn’t believe the strength he wielded. Changmin then levered himself to pick the bed up and stood there glaring at them. “The next person to say no gets the bed thrown at them.”

“Calm down Changmin,” Junsu said, standing just out of reach from the bed that swung around above their heads. “It’s going to be fine.”

“You can’t throw the bed if you’re still stuck to it,” Heechul drawled from the door as Changmin snarled at him.

Shiwon and Micky snickered at this as Jae let his face fall into his hands.

Moonlight poured through the window as a completely disoriented Jae stared at it in bewilderment. What. the. hell. He sat up in the bed and looked around as he remembered he was sleeping in Micky’s bed, not trying to keep a crazy Changmin from throwing said bed out the window. Only a dream could be that ridiculous.

Micky sat up with a groan, rubbing his face. “Oh man, I just had the weirdest dream!”

“About Changmin picking up your bed and threatening to throw it?” Jae asked hesitantly, hoping for the best.

“Yeah, it was…” he stopped and stared at Jae for a moment before flopping back onto the mattress, pulling Jae down with him. “You need to shield your mind better when you sleep. It keeps me from being infected by your imagination.”

Jae grunted and said he would try his best. He could make no promises at this point, he thought to himself as he immediately started to drift. He awoke the next morning from a dreamless sleep this time—thank god—to white pouring over him and warmth surrounding him. It took him a moment to realize the sunlight was sneaking in through the open window and bathing the bed in bright light. He turned over in annoyance to bury his head under the pillow before remembering Micky. He peeked out to admire the way the sunlight lit up the planes of his back and smiled. Should a killer look so appealing?

“No,” Micky answered and shoved a pillow over his own head. “Damn window,” came muffled from under the pillow.

“No crazy dreams?” Jae asked with a smirk.

“None that I can think of,” his lover replied.

“Good.” Jae scooted closer to share Micky’s pillow-shield and steal a kiss.

They spent as much careless time in bed until Jae’s stomach started to lobby for food and Jae couldn’t ignore it any longer. Micky admitted they didn’t usually have much food in the house unless they had a craving and had Jae write down a list of things he could eat while visiting so Micky could go pick it up. The plan amused Jae and he happily gave his lover a list of food, wondering if the supermarket would be empty from the holiday. Then again, Micky could probably run to another town and back before Jae would even notice his absence.

When Micky left, Jae showered and began to wander around the house and found the sitting room that had a piano in it. He hadn’t paid much attention to it the first time around, but now Jae felt his fingers itching to play and wanted to hear how it sounded. No one would mind right? He had a feeling Micky would probably be the kind of person to start playing it at all hours of the night and no one would complain with his talent.

Once his fingers were on the keys, Jae knew he’d never be able to tear himself away until he played. He let the first thing that came to mind flow out through his fingers, the slow, lingering melody filling the air around him as he played. He hadn’t done this in a long time. It was a slow, calming, yet sad melody that he hadn’t heard or felt in a while.

“It’s sad, and a bit haunting,” Heechul commented as he sat next to Jae on the bench. Somehow his sudden presence didn’t bother Jae in the least. “Reminds me of my past.”

Jae let his fingers slow to a stop and glanced at Heechul. He wondered what prompted the company. “Micky told me that you were attacked by animals of the human kind. I can only assume what that means.”

Heechul nodded silently and placed his hands on the keys to play a different, poignant melody. “Actually, it didn’t take long for me to get over it. Not with Rain and Micky there to help, especially with the change. And Hyori was also kind and helped with my emotions and mood. I don’t mind talking about it, but you don’t seem to need clarification,” he said with a small smile as his hands stopped playing.

“Not really,” Jae agreed as he took up the melody where Heechul left off.

“Changmin had a worse time than I did.”

Jae’s hands stopped above the keys as his gaze shifted to the vampire beside him in surprise. He never would have expected that to come out of Heechul’s mouth.

“Did they tell you about Changmin destroying the bed?” he asked as Jae nodded. “It really did happen. Micky only caught a glimpse of his change that one time and it almost knocked him unconscious. Changmin was very careful to keep his memories from surfacing around Micky again.” Heechul shook his head as his eyes fell into a distant look. “I took him aside a few days after it happened and told him about myself and in turn, he divulged some of his memories to me. There were things done to him that I dare not repeat, but believe me when I say I hope Changmin will get to exact his revenge someday like I was able to.”

Worse. What could be worse than—he mentally shook the thought from his head. And revenge? He didn’t even want to think about it. Now he understood why Changmin and Junsu were so inseparable. Junsu had always acted like he was human and always had a caring way about him. He must have been the reason Changmin kept going—kept living.

“Sorry, I’ve ruined the mood.” Heechul sighed and leaned back.

“Not at all. It just gave me some things to think about,” Jae replied as he smiled a little. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

They spent the next half hour fiddling around with the piano keys and Jae watched Heechul play before he would copy it. Hasty melodies were mixed with chuckling and comments. It was a very productive afternoon by Jae’s standards—he felt much more comfortable around Heechul now. They concluded their session when Micky returned with food for Jae and his spoils were quite good. It might have been late at that point, but bacon, eggs and toast seemed like an appropriate choice to Jae for some reason. As he ate, Micky and Heechul talked and Jae found himself liking the younger vampire even more. The arrogant show he put on at school was gone and he just acted like a normal person at home. Jae was a little taken aback by this, but was content to keep this thoughts unspoken. Maybe he did it to keep from getting to close.

Maybe he was the smart one.

After eating, Jae spent most of the day fiddling with the piano, his lover reading a book in what looked like a very comfortable armchair. At some point near sunset, Jae was about to turn to Micky to ask if he had any blank sheet music and there was the vampire holding some out. Stunned, Jae thanked him quietly and looked up to see a small smile.

“I didn’t expect you to be so talented,” he said softly.

Jae blushed in response to the compliment. “Not really,” he mumbled and fumbled to put the papers on the piano.

Micky caught his hands and sat on the bench. “You disagree?”

“Ah, it’s not that, I just never really thought I was particularly talented with piano,” Jae explained hastily. “I concentrate on my voice more.”

“Ah,” Micky nodded. “I’m always playing piano and writing songs whenever the urge takes me.”

“I had a feeling,” Jae replied with a smirk, imagining Micky at the piano at 3am scribbling out notes and repeatedly playing parts of a song.

“Your imagination is so …accurate,” Micky replied as Jae laughed. “I think you should write more. You might be surprised with what will emerge.”

“Somehow I don’t think I’d have the time.” Jae smiled as he felt his lover squeeze his hands. “Why are you doing this?”

Micky shrugged. “You seemed to be hesitant about it. I thought you might need some encouragement.”

As much as Jae hated to admit it, the vampire was really quite sweet. He leaned closer to press a kiss to his lover’s lips and murmured a thank you before he started to fiddle with the piano again, this time with Micky taking part in the fiddling. Eventually, Jae’s hands got tired and he found himself sitting over Micky in the big armchair, curiously reading along in the vampire’s book. It was a bit mind numbing until Changmin wandered into the room and crouched beside the chair.

“So,” he started awkwardly. “Haven’t seen you since the other night…”

“Heard someone has been monopolizing your time,” Micky replied with a smirk as Jae found himself doing the same. “And when I say heard, I mean it literally.”

Changmin gave them a sheepish grin. “Sorry about that. You told him, right?”

“I did,” Micky said with a nod.

Changmin looked to Jae “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before you came, but I really hadn’t expected to be chained up,” he apologized.

Jae just shook his head and shifted to pull the other vampire into a tight hug. “I’m just glad you trusted me.”

“Same here,” Changmin muttered into his shoulder. “I’ll be better next time.”

“Next time?” Jae teased, liking the implication in the vampire’s voice.

Changmin didn’t stay for long after their hug and snuck off—he assumed to find Junsu again—and the two on the chair went back to reading the book. Jae could only guess why Micky was interested in this book he was reading—it was about vampires. But that seemed to be the only similarity.

“He won’t drink her blood?” Jae asked when they finished another chapter of the book and looked at the cover. “Where did you get this?”

Micky sighed in displeasure. “I lost a bet with Shiwon. It’s some teen novel.”

“Ah,” Jae nodded as he rested against the back of the cushy chair. “That explains the ridiculous amounts of ‘no one understands me except my hot hot boyfriend’ thinking this girl is doing,” he said carelessly as he waved his hand at the book.

“Aren’t they all like that? Girls and their books?” Micky asked with a curious eyebrow.

“I don’t know, I don’t read them and I’m not interested in girls.” Jae replied with a careless shrug.

“It’s kinda like shoujo manga, isn’t it?” he said thoughtfully.

“Ah, you might have a point there.” Jae nodded in agreement, glad he knew those terms.

“And at least with manga, there’s pretty pictures so you can skip over the useless dialogue,” Micky grumbled as he made a face at the book.

Jae laughed and grabbed the book. “Forget this. Let’s go do all the things they won’t,” he said as he tossed the hunk of paper away.

A sly grin slid onto Micky’s lips before Jae captured them. He knew the vampire wouldn’t object. He knew it was completely irresponsible.

And that’s why he liked it.
