Part 16
Days, weeks and months went by, and nothing horrible happened. As cliché as that sounded to You, he was quite content to be happy with his life now that he was a human. The wedding and coronation for Yoshiki and Eriko went smoothly, much to everyone’s relief and it wasn’t until five months after the ceremonies that You realized—it was his birthday. He couldn’t believe he’d been living in a palace for over half a year.
Of course, You didn’t even realize this on his own. It finally dawned on him that it was his birthday when Gackt wrapped his arms around the taller man from behind and said the two magic words.
“Happy Birthday,” the prince murmured and kissed the back of You’s neck as the brunette blinked in surprise.
He turned in Gackt’s arms. “How did you know?”
The prince seemed very amused by this reaction, laughing outright. “I asked Megumi months ago so that I wouldn’t miss it.”
“I… didn’t even realize that it was my birthday,” You said sheepishly.
“I didn’t think you would,” Gackt replied with a chuckle. “We planned something nice for you. Nothing huge like a ball they would do for my birthday, but everyone will be there.”
You smiled. “Really? Just for me?” His smile widened (if possible) as he picked his lover up and spun him around. “Thank you!”
Gackt laughed as the taller man spun him around, and let You plant a kiss on his lips once they stopped. “I think there will be presents too.”
“I don’t care!” The brunette was glowing. “Just to know everyone will be there makes me happy.” He stopped and blinked. “What should I wear?”
The prince laughed. “Anything you want.”
You sighed in relief. “I thought I might have to wear something really nice.”
“You can if you want to.” Gackt sat on the bed and smiled when You deposited himself in the prince’s lap. “And what would you like for your birthday, young man?”
“You,” the brunette smirked.
“Me?” Gackt looked innocent and pushed You off of his lap. “Why me?”
You leaned down to touch noses with the prince. “Am I supposed to want something else?”
“Gifts, maybe?”
“Your love is the best gift I’ve ever gotten in my entire life.”
Gackt smiled. “So you don’t want this?” He held up a little box and waved it around, getting up and moving away as he did so.
“What’s that? Is it shiny?” You grinned and followed, noting that Gackt was picking up speed.
“You’ll have to catch me first!” the prince called and turned to run. You laughed and sprinted after the blonde man. He followed the blonde out of his suite and through the twisting hallways of the palace, causing many servants to jump out of the way or press themselves up against the walls in order to keep out of their way. The brunette finally skidded to a stop as he followed Gackt through a set of double doors into the smaller second dining hall in the palace.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” everyone yelled as he stopped, his face red from running, laughter escaping from his throat. He couldn’t believe it. Everyone was there with smiling faces; even Vivian.
You was then crowded by his friends and birthday wishes were yelled at him as well as hugs stolen from his arms. He didn’t mind all the fuss though. He hadn’t seen a party like this for him since he’d left his original home. You thought back on the gatherings held at his family’s home not missing them much, but suddenly missing his parents.
“Happy Birthday, honey.”
You blinked and whirled around to see his parents standing before him. “Mom! Dad!” He grinned happily and moved forward to hug them both. “I’ve missed you!”
“We miss you too, dear,” his mother smiled when he released them.
“What are you doing here?” he asked.
“You think we’d miss our oldest son’s first birthday on the surface?” His father clapped him on the shoulder. “I’m proud of you. Just promise me you’ll have a report of some kind done again soon.”
The brunette put a hand to his forehead. “I forgot to send it! I’ve got a new one prepared though.”
“Good,” his father said with a smile.
“You!” Gackt tugged on You’s sleeve as he appeared at the taller man’s side.
You’s mother tilted her head at Gackt. “My, my, Prince Gackt, you sure have grown since I saw you last.”
Gackt started, surprise written on his face. “Lady Tsuki!”
“I was wondering how handsome you’d become. I now know that You hasn’t been exaggerating in his letters.” Tsuki smiled. The two young men turned red as and Gackt mumbled a quiet thank you.
“Come dear,” You’s father tugged her away. “Let’s see how Megumi is doing.”
“I want to talk to you later.” Tsuki winked at her son before strolling away with her husband.
“I didn’t know she was your mother…” Gackt murmured.
“You say that like you’ve met her before.” A curious frown settled itself on You’s forehead.
“She used to come here a lot.” The prince turned to his lover. “At least twice a year, when I was younger. Didn’t you know?”
You shook his head. “I don’t think I ever really paid attention…” He looked sheepish. “Silly, huh?”
“Nah.” Gackt smiled. “Just you.”
You laughed and wrapped an arm around his lover’s waist. “So, where’s that little present you were coaxing me with?”
“Actually, I was hoping to give that to you in private.” Gackt’s smile faded a little as he looked up into You’s eyes. The action made the taller man tilt his head in worry.
“What is it?” he asked quietly as a commotion was starting at the other side of the room, making him look over to see Hyde jump onto the table, trying to coax Megumi onto it.
“Ah, looks like it’s starting,” Gackt commented, tugging You toward the crowd.
“What’s starting?” You let himself be led over as he kept his eyes on Hyde.
The short, black haired man kept motioning to Megumi, who in turn shook her head and laughed at him, telling him to get down. She squealed when a bunch of servants finally lifted her and set her on the table next to Hyde.
“Thank you!” Hyde grinned at saluted them as everyone laughed.
Megumi put her hands on her hips. “Are you going to sing to me again?” she teased.
“I hadn’t thought of that!” Hyde looked positively cheerful at the idea.
She waved her hands. “Forget I said that!” she said hurriedly as everyone burst into laughter again.
“In light of what I’m about to do, you might forget you said that too.” He smirked.
“Eh?” Megumi blinked in confusion. “What do you mean?”
“Megumi, my love, my heart—”
She crossed her arms and stared at him levelly. “What did you do this time?”
Everyone jeered.
“I got you a ring.” Hyde slipped down to one knee and pulled out a box in the same motion, opening it and holding it up to a very surprised Megumi.
“Oh my god….” She stared at the box in shock.
“Megumi, will you marry me?” Hyde smiled.
She was silent for a moment, her mouth working but her voice refusing to do so before she squealed and shouted, “YES!”
The crowd began to cheer as Hyde stood and the two hugged tightly. Everyone began to sing one of the local songs as Hyde slipped the ring onto Megumi’s finger and kissed her. You didn’t know the song, but he smiled as he heard Gackt and the rest of his friends from the palace singing along. He watched silently as Hyde and Megumi smiled at one another, so happy in that moment together. He could tell that the world didn’t exist for them save one another and knew what that felt like. It made him happy to see his friends happy.
“Gackt?” You asked, loud enough so that only his lover could hear him.
“Yes?” the prince replied as he turned to the taller man.
“Do you think that we rushed into anything?” You murmured as Gackt’s hands closed around his, pressing the box he’d seen before in his hands.
“I do, but I’m glad that we did.” He smiled.
You frowned in amusement at Gackt’s actions and looked down at the box. He brought his hand up and opened it slowly as Gackt moved closer to him. His lips parted in a surprised smile as he gazed into the box. The surprise waned a bit as he realized someone was watching him and stole a glance at his parents, who were across the room watching him and the prince.
You closed the box and looked into Gackt’s eyes. “Would you put it on me later?” He asked quietly.
“I hope we’ll have time.” The prince grinned as the crown began to surge toward them.
“Why?” The former merman looked confused, obviously having forgotten what day it was again.
“Time for the birthday boy to open his presents!” Megumi grabbed You and dragged him over to a different table that was heaping with gifts. He couldn’t believe his eyes, but of course, they could have been wrong because they began to sting with the beginnings of tears as everyone started singing a happy birthday to him.
You blinked away the tears as he slipped the box in his hand into his pocket. He would save the best for last.

Epilogue
You opened his eyes as his arm reached out to feel the other side of the empty bed he lay in. He blinked and looked over at the space, then further past the bed and into the bathroom that lay beyond the wall, seeing his lover’s behind peeking out from one side of the doorframe. He smiled and turned over onto his stomach and closed his eyes to snuggle up in the warm blankets. He was still tired from the night before.
Hyde and Megumi had exchanged their vows after waiting nearly half a year. All of You and Megumi’s friends from the sea had attended the wedding and the reception afterward. The reception and the antics that happened later are what had tired You out. The former merman smirked and decided not to dwell as he looked down at the bracelet on his arm. He smiled at the simple onyx beaded bracelet that Gackt had given him for his birthday months before. The prince had said it would protect him from negative energy. You touched the beads as he remembered giving a similar bracelet to Gackt for his birthday, but the artisan had let him design it. He was very proud of the two bracelets and the fact that neither ever took them off.
“Lazy.”
The brunette glanced up to see his lover standing at the side of the bed, wearing a smile and nothing else.
“What are you doing up?” You complained. “You’re supposed to be in here and have your arms wrapped around me.”
“We did have a late night last night, didn’t we?” Gackt grinned and sat on the bed.
“The wedding was amazing, but that party was even better.” The taller returned the grin and crawled over to his lover, kissing his shoulder before capturing his lips. “You didn’t answer my question.”
“I had to get something,” Gackt told him and looked into his eyes, a serious tone to his own.
“What?” You asked curiously.
“This.” The prince held up a box very similar to the one he’d given You for his birthday, but a little smaller.
“What is it?” he asked as he took the box he was offered and inspected it. He was very interested in what lay inside the box and looked to Gackt, wondering if he should open it or not.
“It’s a surprise.”
You tilted his head and gazed into his lover’s eyes, a deep affection reflected in them. “How long have I been here?”
“Exactly one year today.”
The brunette chuckled and tapped the box on Gackt’s nose. “I knew there had to be a reason. So, is it like our anniversary?”
“I hope so.” Gackt smiled. “Open it.”
You shook his head in amusement as he opened the box, all emotion save for shock draining from his face as he stared. Inside the box lay two silver rings, and You knew where he’d seen this type of ring before. The day before, he’d watched Hyde and Megumi exchange very similar rings and a very solid realization entered his mind.
“These… these are…” You tried to form more words, but it seemed that his mouth just wasn’t going to listen to him. He looked to his lover for help.
“I know what they are. And you know what they are,” Gackt murmured, a bit flustered as a blush spread across his cheeks.
“The laws don’t allow us to get married…” You whispered.
“We don’t need the laws, do we?”
The emotions held in the prince’s eyes said it all and You couldn’t deny him. “No. We can make our promise without them.”
The blonde smiled and pressed a kiss to his lover’s lips, his own warm and inviting, almost letting You forget about the rings until the kiss ended and Gackt took one out of the box. You did the same and set the box aside. He watched as the prince slipped the ring onto his finger and said a quiet vow. A loving smile took over You’s lips as he slipped the ring he held on Gackt’s finger and in turn recited a vow to his lover. It might not have been as big, flashy or as fun as Hyde and Megumi’s wedding, but it was all they needed.
There was a new feeling that entered You’s chest when he slipped his arms around Gackt’s waist and leaned close to place a kiss on his lips. It didn’t take him long to realize that it was like completing the last piece of a very long and arduous puzzle. True, his life had been threatened in the very first weeks that he arrived, but they as a couple still were happy together and fought together, the good times far outnumbering the bad. Now, with this man in his arms, and with his promises finally made a reality, You felt complete.
The brunette nuzzled Gackt’s cheek and thought as they hugged one another tightly. His life had changed so much in the past year. He’d turned human, learned so many new and wonderful things, had almost been kidnapped, and had fallen in love. It all sounded like a fairy tale in his head—making him smile—and that he’d already lived a lifetime. You looked at it as a chapter in his life that had ended, making way for the beginning for a new one. He didn’t know what the rest of his life would hold, but with Gackt in his life, he was sure he could do anything. Tomorrow could change everything, but he was ready to meet it head on.
Gackt rested his cheek on You’s shoulder as he chuckled. “Do you think anyone will notice?”
You nodded. “But I doubt they’ll say anything unless they know us well.”
“Do you think they’ll say anything bad?”
The brunette looked up into his lover’s dark eyes. “Nothing they could say would ever make me want to leave you.”
Gackt looked down and chuckled. “You always say the right things.” He took You’s hands in his own. “When I’m with you, I feel like it’s a dream—like I’m in another world. I’ve never felt like that before.” He smiled as he looked back up into his lover’s eyes, making the former merman feel lightheaded, and a tingling in his stomach.
“When I’m with you, it feels like I’m falling in love over and over.” You grinned as Gackt blushed.
“Stop distracting me.” The prince ruffled his lover’s hair and got up, moving toward his wardrobe to get dressed. He stopped mid-pantleg as he noticed You hadn’t followed him and that his lover was still sitting in bed, pouting childishly. Gackt narrowed his eyes. “Stop it.” You pouted more. Gackt sighed and finished putting his pants on before going back to plant a deep kiss on his lover’s lips. “Better?”
“Much.” You smiled satisfied and slipped out of bed to get dressed as well, finishing much quicker than the prince. He stopped to watch his lover dress with a smile, taking pleasure in the thought that he’d get to take those clothes off of the blonde later.
“Pervert,” the prince murmured amused as he finished buttoning his shirt. He laughed when You gave him a hurt look and pressed another kiss to his taller lover’s lips. “Naughty merman.”
“I live to serve.” You grinned and slipped his arms around Gackt’s waist. “Think Hyde and Megumi will be at breakfast?”
“I don’t know, but we can find out.” Gackt smirked. “Wanna race?”
“Sure.” You thought this wouldn’t be too difficult.
“Go!” Gackt slipped out of his lover’s hold and bolted out of the room, his befuddled, but laughing lover fast on his heels.

True, his life had been threatened in the very first weeks that he arrived, but they as a couple still were happy together and fought together, the good times far outnumbering the bad. Now, with this man in his arms, and with his promises finally made a reality, You felt complete.
The brunette nuzzled Gackt’s cheek and thought as they hugged one another tightly. His life had changed so much in the past year. He’d turned human, learned so many new and wonderful things, had almost been kidnapped, and had fallen in love. It all sounded like a fairy tale in his head—making him smile—and that he’d already lived a lifetime. You looked at it as a chapter in his life that had ended, making way for the beginning for a new one. He didn’t know what the rest of his life would hold, but with Gackt in his life, he was sure he could do anything. Tomorrow could change everything, but he was ready to meet it head on.
Gackt rested his cheek on You’s shoulder as he chuckled. “Do you think anyone will notice?”
You nodded. “But I doubt they’ll say anything unless they know us well.”
“Do you think they’ll say anything bad?”
The brunette looked up into his lover’s dark eyes. “Nothing they could say would ever make me want to leave you.”
Gackt looked down and chuckled. “You always say the right things.” He took You’s hands in his own. “When I’m with you, I feel like it’s a dream—like I’m in another world. I’ve never felt like that before.” He smiled as he looked back up into his lover’s eyes, making the former merman feel lightheaded, and a tingling in his stomach.
“When I’m with you, it feels like I’m falling in love over and over.” You grinned as Gackt blushed.
“Stop distracting me.” The prince ruffled his lover’s hair and got up, moving toward his wardrobe to get dressed. He stopped mid-pantleg as he noticed You hadn’t followed him and that his lover was still sitting in bed, pouting childishly. Gackt narrowed his eyes. “Stop it.” You pouted more. Gackt sighed and finished putting his pants on before going back to plant a deep kiss on his lover’s lips. “Better?”
“Much.” You smiled satisfied and slipped out of bed to get dressed as well, finishing much quicker than the prince. He stopped to watch his lover dress with a smile, taking pleasure in the thought that he’d get to take those clothes off of the blonde later.
“Pervert,” the prince murmured amused as he finished buttoning his shirt. He laughed when You gave him a hurt look and pressed another kiss to his taller lover’s lips. “Naughty merman.”
“I live to serve.” You grinned and slipped his arms around Gackt’s waist. “Think Hyde and Megumi will be at breakfast?”
“I don’t know, but we can find out.” Gackt smirked. “Wanna race?”
“Sure.” You thought this wouldn’t be too difficult.
“Go!” Gackt slipped out of his lover’s hold and bolted out of the room, his befuddled, but laughing lover fast on his heels.
