O:

“I hate myself,” Micky said against the table his head rested on. Changmin patted his back as Junsu made tsk noises.

After both he and Changmin had met up with Junsu and Yoohwan after shopping, the other two were suspicious about the grins on their faces and demanded explanations. So they went to an Italian restaurant where they ran into the girl again and Changmin stammered greetings with her before she went off with her friends. It had been exceedingly amusing to watch until the topic turned to Jae. For once though, Junsu hadn’t teased him (a lot) and Yoohwan told him to be careful. Apparently, his mind didn’t understand what the word careful meant.

From the moment he walked into the room after the long weekend, it really was a disaster. Jae greeted him and his new clothing with a grin and a laugh. They talked about what they’d done over the holiday and finished up homework as they chatted. Then it started.

Micky walked into Jae as he was exiting the bathroom. He bumped into Jae as they left the room. They knocked heads when Jae dropped his pen and they both reached for it. Their eyes would meet and Micky would feel himself going red before conversation could continue. They would reach for the same thing and fumble, their hands touching. Micky supposed it could have been worse, as Jae didn’t even seem to notice all the fumbling on Micky’s part. But it was starting to fray his nerves, and after a few days, he couldn’t concentrate anymore.

“Just act like you did before,” Changmin told him with a sigh.

“I am, which is probably why he hasn’t noticed.” Micky sat up and shook his head. “This is stupid.”

You are stupid,” Junsu muttered.

“I am,” Micky agreed again as he started in on his homework again. “I want to say something, but every time I try, it just sounds stupid.”

“Write him a poem?” Junsu offered.

“No,” Micky growled in reply. “Some people find that sort of thing lame.” And Micky wondered if Jae were one of those people.

“Don’t make a move until Jae makes one first,” Changmin said as he chewed on the end of his pencil, then traded it for a piece of pocky.

“Why do you say that?” Micky asked as he stole a piece, much to Changmin’s chagrin.

“Because he is the most recently broken up. He has to be ready to move on,” he said as Micky and Junsu nodded. That sounded pretty good and took the weight of asking someone else off of his shoulders. At least until they deemed Jae’s singledom long enough anyway.

Unfortunately Jae didn’t so much make a move as he was himself. Jae was always flirtatious with everyone, which was frustrating, but also distracting if it was Micky that he flirted with. When Jae stayed out late one weeknight, Micky wasn’t surprised to be honest. He just ignored the time and kept doing his homework. He was relieved when the door finally opened and Jae came in.

“Not going to ask where I’ve been?”

“I’m not your mother, but the thought had crossed my mind.” Curiosity got the better of him when he didn’t get an answer and he turned to stare in shock. “Jesus, what happened?” he asked and got up as Jae carefully sat on his bed. His hands and arms were completely scraped up and he had a nice scrape on the side of his chin, not to mention the tear in his jeans and the blood around the edge. Micky went to his closet and dug around the bottom to pull out the first aid kit his mother had forced him to take to college his first year. He made a mental note to call her and thank her as he set it down on the bed next to Jae.

“The short version is, I fell,” Jae said with a wry grin. “Ah!” he grabbed his beads from the bedside table and slipped them on his wrist. “No wonder.”

“You can tell me the long version in the bathroom,” Micky said as he helped Jae up, taking him into the bathroom to clean his hands and arms.

“I was coming out of the computer lab across campus. Went over there after my last class to make some printouts for a few essays. Tripped going down the goddamn stairs.” He hissed as Micky scrubbed the scrape on his right hand. “Sorry.”

“Why are you apologizing? It was an accident,” Micky said as he inspected his work and deemed that scrape clean before moving to Jae’s other hand. “You should have called me.” He never knew he had a nurse mode and just pushed the ridiculous thought away as he worked.

“I can walk—ow!” he snapped as Micky went after a piece of rock with some tweezers.

“Your pain is temporary,” Micky replied as he let go of Jae’s hand to inspect his chin. “This face however will never be the same.”

“Fuck you,” Jae said with a laugh and shoved him away.

“Take your pants off and sit on the toilet,” Micky ordered as he went to get the first aid kit.

“Wow, I don’t think anyone has ever said that to me before,” Jae replied as he unzipped his jeans.

“Just you wait until I tell you to bend over and cough.” Micky waggled his eyebrows as he returned.

“Geez, I thought we’d get a date in before we went straight to groping,” Jae teased as Micky kneeled and set the kit down. “Wow, jumping right in.”

“Jae,” Micky warned as he gave him a look.

“Sorry.” He just grinned as Micky shook his head in amusement.

Micky didn’t even bother being gentle. He scrubbed the crap out of Jae’s shin, ignoring when Jae would hiss in response. It needed to be done, and Jae deserved it a little for being a smartass. When he was finished, he slathered Jae’s shin and the rest of his scrapes in ointment, then covered them with band aids, including the one on his chin. He then had to wipe Jae’s chin off since the blood had dribbled down it. When he was finished, he looked at the towel, spots reddish brown with Jae’s dried blood.

“Thanks,” Jae said quietly as Micky looked up, quite surprised by the softness in Jae’s eyes.

He was caught for a moment before he blinked and looked away. “No problem,” he replied as he set the towel on the counter, his heart pounding as he tried to busy himself with rearranging the kit.

“I didn’t expect you to take care of me,” he said as he sat forward. “Actually, I wasn’t going to bother cleaning them.”

“That is totally unsanitary,” Micky told him and poked his forehead. “You’re lucky my mother made me bring this.”

Jae smiled as he stood and nudged Micky on his way out. “Thanks again. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“Bleed to death, clearly,” Micky said as he followed and watched Jae hobble to his bed and strip his t-shirt before sitting. He tried not to stare and leaned on the wall. “You hurt your ankle too?”

“A bit, but I think it’ll be better by morning. Say, do you think if I get a scar, it’ll make me look sexy.”

Micky snorted. “Oh, so sexy,” he said with a roll of his eyes and went back to his laptop. He wasn’t going to get any more work done tonight, so might as well shut it off. Jae grunted and a glance back told him the guy was trying to wiggle his way into a pair of sweats. The image was so amusing that Micky had to set his head on the desk as he sniggered.

“Yeah, this is definitely sexy,” Jae said as he sat up to pull the leg up above his bandaided scrape, though why, Micky didn’t know. He was staring at Jae’s abs—dammit!

Despite the distraction, Micky managed to make his way to the bathroom, do his nightly thing and get into bed without incident. Jae, as always, was laying in bed with his headphones on and arms behind his head. Micky turned over and stared at the wall before he closed his eyes as he wondered if he was doing the right thing.

He thought he’d just closed his eyes when he felt a hand shaking him.

“What?” he asked, sleep hazing everything.

“Your alarm didn’t go off,” Jae said as he pointed. “Shouldn’t you be getting ready for class?”

Micky rolled over to see that indeed, he was late. He cursed and jumped up to gather his things without bothering to get dressed. Half of his classmates came to class in pajamas anyway. Luckily, he’d gotten the homework for his morning class finished the night before and organized it before shoving it into his bag.

“Thanks,” he said apologetically as Jae just waved, and he ran off to class. Heart pounding, he slipped into the room just in time and took a seat with an accomplished grin as the professor teased him. It didn’t matter as he heard his phone buzz in his bag and pulled it out to check it.

[You’re welcome ;)]

He grinned that big, stupid grin. Now, there was no going back.

When he arrived back at the dorm, Jae was gone, but Micky was a bit thankful for that. He could have a shower in peace, and did just that. Afterward, he felt much better and went in search of lunch. He ran into Jae afterward and thanked him as they made their way back to the room. They were chatting, quite animatedly when they were interrupted.

“Hey, Micky?”

They stopped and looked back as Micky recognized the girl as the one from his poetry class. She bit her lip nervously as she approached and Micky braced himself as he knew what was coming.

“How’s it going?” she asked with a smile.

“Great,” he said honestly, despite the fact that he knew this wasn’t going to end well. “What’s up?”

“Ah, well, there’s a party Friday night and I was wondering if you’d be my date?” she asked, twisting her fingers nervously as she looked up at him through the fringe of her bangs.

“I really hate to do it, but I’m going to have to tell you no,” he said as nicely as possible.

“You busy?” Jae asked suddenly.

Micky gave him a look, and Jae just grinned. He was making this harder than it was. “I’m sorry, I just don’t think you’re my type,” he told the girl.

“What? But we have a bunch of things in common, we even have a class together.” She was dancing dangerously close to pleading.

“Ah, that is…” he paused as he tried to find the right words. “I should probably say you’re not really the right gender to be my type…” He watched her as it clicked and her cheeks went bright pink.

“Oh! Oh…” She pursed her lips and then laughed, embarrassed. “I, uh, I see. Well, I guess I’ll see you in class then. Bye!” she said and made a quick exit, walking off toward the art buildings.

“I hate doing that,” Micky said quietly. He turned to see Jae regarding him curiously. “What?”

Jae blinked and turned with a shrug. “Nothing.”

Micky frowned as he followed after before stopping as it hit him. He smacked his forehead and chased after Jae to catch up and walk beside him. They just walked in silence as Micky mentally berated himself. No wonder Jae had never made a move on him—he’d never bothered to mention that he was gay. He wondered if this changed anything. Apparently it didn’t, since Jae acted like he always did, and Micky shrugged off the feeling as they entered their room and he sifted through his bag. All he had to do was read for Humanities, and that seemed boring.

“Did you already read The Great Gatsby?” Jae asked as he pulled it out of his bag and plopped onto his bed.

“Yeah, I finished it the other day,” he replied as he perused Jae’s shelf.

“Bleh,” Jae growled as he opened the book and started reading.

“It’s not that long, just read it,” he said as he plucked a book off the shelf and returned to his own bed. He stared at the blankets for a moment as he thought about the positions he could occupy and decided to change it up. He sat on the floor with his back against the bed, his feet stretched out under Jae’s bed. It was much nicer than expected and he slouched down to get comfy and began reading.

“You look comfortable.”

“Astute observation,” Micky replied as Jae moved and sat on the floor before laying back to lay his head on Micky’s lap. “What are you doing?”

“Making you useful,” Jae replied in his normal ‘so there’ tone. He propped the book up on his chest and kept reading.

Micky just rolled his eyes and went back to his book, trying to ignore the fact that Jae’s head was in his lap. A glance told him there were no buttons open, since there were no buttons on Jae’s t-shirt. Usually, he could gauge Jae’s actions by the number of buttons undone, but now he had no reference. What was Jae thinking? Micky gritted his teeth and WENT. BACK. TO. HIS. BOOK. This time it worked and he let himself get caught up in the plot.

“I can’t believe I’m reading this book for a college class,” Jae muttered after about an hour.

“I think I read it during high school too,” Micky replied as he turned a page.

“These people are all assholes.”

“That’s the point. They’re supposed to be living in the most luxurious place, super happy and rich, but they’re all completely miserable.”

“Must suck that they can’t be honest with themselves.”

“Yeah,” Micky said as he glanced at Jae before staring at his book again. Was he trying to hint at something…

“MICKY!” The door flew open and right into Jae’s foot –the one he’d twisted—as he cried out in pain.

Micky stared in horror as Junsu dropped to his knees and profusely apologized to Jae, who popped him on the head with his book. Well, at least he wasn’t too angry about it. Changmin finally caught Micky’s eyes and gave him a look—THE look. Micky shook his head ever so slightly to then get a look of complete disbelief. Leave it to Changmin to be disappointed that they hadn’t hooked up yet.

Yunho cleared his throat. “We were going to the library and were wondering if you wanted to join us.”

Micky looked to Jae who just shrugged. “Sure.”

After packing their things, the group made their way over to the library, Micky and Changmin trailing slightly behind everyone.

“So…”

“It was nothing.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“You’re an idiot.”

“We’ve already discussed this.” That ended the conversation.

Once inside the library, they took over the table that Micky usually found himself at with Changmin and Junsu, only their seating order changed with the newcomers. Micky sat in the middle on one side with Junsu to his right. Yunho sat across from Junsu, Changmin across from Micky, and Jae across from the empty chair that Micky had put his bag on.

Since they were in the library, Micky decided he should actually do some studying and finally pulled his humanities book out. He was somewhere in the middle of taking notes on the chapter when he realized just how quiet it was. It was an odd sort of quiet though, not like the comfortable one he and Jae had when they were reading in the room. He glanced up to see Jae’s eyes on him before the young man quickly looked down to his book again. Surprised, Micky watched at him for a moment longer before going back to his notes.

Was he…?

No. Don’t let yourself…

Dammit.
