29: if things go wrong, hold tight
Micky held an arm out to Boa, who took it to stand and was pulled into a hug. “Cheater.”
“It’s called teamwork,” she retorted.
“She ran away from me,” Keita ratted her out as she blushed and glanced away.
“Don’t ever do that again,” Micky scolded and thought about it for a moment. “And remind me to never make you angry. Especially when you’re pregnant.”
“Hah hah,” Boa replied monotone with a glare.
“It’s what he deserved though,” Keita said quietly, and they all went silent, not knowing what to say about the man.
Jaejoong broke the silence finally. “Let’s just get out of here.”
“Hey!” a higher voice rang out and they looked over to see Sunny enter. “Your brother is damn good with locations. Did I miss… Oh, my…” She saw Gackt’s body and glanced away. “I see everything has been taken care of.”
“Not quite.”
Micky felt like the ground had fallen out from under his feet when he heard that voice. He watched helplessly as Sunny went white, swayed, and then fell, revealing a very calm Hyde behind her.
“NO!” Keita snapped and took off. Micky didn’t even think, he tugged Jaejoong in the other direction, away from the door that Hyde guarded. Or, wait—he looked back to see Keita was on his knees, next to Sunny and no one stood behind them in the doorway. But where…
“No, you were supposed to protect her!” Sunny managed and Micky’s eyes finally caught Hyde holding Boa. One hand was on her neck, the other on her stomach. How did he get there so fast? He’d been on the other side of the room!
“No,” he whispered, feeling a fool as he heard Jaejoong curse. They’d left their most precious team member without protection!
Boa’s eyes met his—terrified—as she stood perfectly still under Hyde’s hands. “Micky…”
“Give him to me, or I’ll make sure you regret it,” Hyde instructed evenly.
“Micky, don’t do it—” Boa cut off as Hyde’s hand tightened around her neck.
“She might lose the baby, or they might both die, I haven’t decided yet.” Hyde tilted his head, as if waiting for Micky to tell him the answer.
She was only twenty feet away, and he couldn’t do anything. The moment stretched before Micky squeezed Jaejoong’s hand without looking back. “I can’t make this decision.”
It was a silence before he felt Jaejoong squeeze back. Unable to do anything else, he let go and moved to stand in front of Micky, his arms held up in surrender.
“Take them!” Hyde snapped and guards poured into the room. Three situated themselves around Keita and Sunny, who were still on the floor near the door. Another two grabbed Jaejoong and pulled him away as Micky was forced to his knees by another pair.
Hyde ordered them moved and Micky was dragged to the far side of the room as he watched Jaejoong being taken up to the device. Jaejoong’s fear got the better of him as he tried to pull away, but the guards forced him closer. Panic made him lash out, his elbow catching one of the guards in the eye and they moved to subdue him. Micky’s eyes found the floor. He couldn’t watch. Another set of guards pulled Boa over to where Micky was being held, against the back wall. He wasn’t sure he could meet her eyes.
His chin was wrenched upward and Hyde stared into his eyes. “Face reality. You lost.”
“Go to hell,” he snarled.
Micky found himself flat on the floor before he could even register the pain on his cheek and back. He coughed as he tried to catch his breath from the blows and pushed up from the ground to see Hyde now standing near the device, supervising the guards’ progress with Jaejoong’s aversion to the machine. How the hell…
“He ported,” Boa muttered, and Micky looked up at her to see her staring at the man in shock as the guards took his arms again, pulling him to his feet.
“What?!” Micky looked away from her only to yelp in surprise when Hyde appeared before him. Even the guards had flinched. For a moment, all he could do was stare. And then it came to him. “You took his attribute.”
Hyde shrugged. “I had to test it somehow.”
Micky realized what Jiyong’s help had caused. Then the situation sank in, and Micky felt the anger build deep in his stomach. “You sick bastard. You want it for yourself.”
“Took you long enough.” He crossed his arms.
“Why!?” Micky demanded as Hyde turned away. “Tell me why!”
“Do you know what it feels like to be powerless?” Hyde snapped back.
“You already have power. You run the damn Order!”
“Endless politics. With his attribute, I can keep that damn panel of old fuckers from bickering over pointless nonsense. With it, I can keep everyone in line by barely lifting a finger. And peons like you won’t be able to stop me anymore.” He shrugged as he paced back and forth. “It wasn’t as if they weren’t scared of my attribute before, but this will make life much easier.”
“Fear keeps them in line.”
“Precisely.”
“So you can have more power. That’s all you assholes ever want, just more power. Where does it end?”
“Here. It ends here.”
“You’ll just want more.”
“Shut up!” Hyde backhanded him and he fell backwards.
“What happened to you? You used to be kind! You helped every new person who got here. You gave them all hope and now you’re going to take it away and control them all?”
Hyde chuckled. “So simple. You people always think that a warm handshake and a kind smile means someone can’t possibly do anything bad. Besides, I’m not one of those disgusting individuals who tried to rape him—”
“You ARE raping him!” Micky roared angrily.
“Nonsense,” Hyde chided. “He doesn’t even want his attribute. Do you, Jaejoong?” He turned as Micky looked up to see that Jaejoong was fully strapped into place as the guards checked his bonds and the machine. But that wasn’t what he was looking at. He saw the guilt in Jaejoong’s eyes before they darted to the side. All the times he’d told Jaejoong he wasn’t a danger and helped him train were coming back to him. Was he regretting it now?
“You see? So, I might as well take it and use it since he doesn’t want to.”
“You’re sick.”
“From my point of view, I’m not the evil one.”
“You never answered my question.”
Hyde narrowed his eyes and moved closer. “I didn’t get where I am now from being a nice person. But you’re right.” He began to pace in front of Micky again. “I was nice, and I was kind. Most of that was not an act. I liked seeing kids like you, and kids from the street who had no money, being offered a new life. All they had to do was pay back what they owed, because you can’t have them thinking everything in life is free. You have to educate them.” He paused to catch his former recruit’s eye. “You see, they need a challenge, a dream to work for. It’s not worth it if you don’t work hard for the end result. Then it’s just something you pass on the street every day—take for granted.”
“You were a gutter kid,” Micky guessed. It was the term the streetwise used for orphans. Technically, Jaejoong was one too, but he’d grown up in an foster family that adopted him, which deemed him unworthy of the slang. Yoseob might have been called it in his life, but technically, he’d never been born into it as Hyde clearly was.
“I wasn’t going to stay in the gutter for the rest of my life.” Hyde turned, distracted by Jaejoong tugging at his bonds again. “Would you like a few last words with him? Since his fighting will probably get him killed when I turn the damned device on.”
Before Micky could even answer, Hyde strode away to speak to a group of guards near a raised platform that had what looked to be a control panel. It was probably for the device, but Micky wasn’t sure. He glanced at Boa who met his eyes.
“Oh, and don’t bother trying to have her run. I have a tag on her, and you’re not sure what will activate it.”
Micky glared at Hyde, whose back was to him. Bastard had eyes in the back of his head. It didn’t matter what he did though, he was being dragged toward Jaejoong, who calmed as he neared.
“A little privacy boys?” Micky asked the guards.
“We’ll shoot you if you touch him,” the one on his left told him and nodded to the others as they retreated out of earshot. They had bats and guns at the ready, but they really weren’t needed.
Micky took a breath knowing what he wanted to say. “I remember the day you asked me how a drain device worked.” He paused as Jaejoong met his gaze. “I could see in your eyes that you wanted desperately to have one used on you.”
“It sounded like an easy way out at the time,” Jaejoong admitted. “You showed me I didn’t need it though.”
“I’m glad.”
“I’m sorry it will end this way.”
“Don’t fight, please?”
Jaejoong shook his head. “Yoochun, I’ve trained too hard to give up now. I won’t stop, I’m going down fighting.”
The fire in his eyes gave Micky hope that he tried desperately to snuff. He was going to have to watch Jaejoong be put through one of the worst experiences of his life and here he was proud to see his lover refuse to sit back and just let them steal his attribute. After all that they’d been through, Jaejoong really did learn something.
“I’m proud of you.”
Jaejoong smiled softly. “I know.”
He couldn’t reach up to hold or kiss Jaejoong, but he had understood. As the guards took him to the other end of the room again, he was pushed to his knees to await the impending transformation. His body folded for them, but his mind was already ticking.
“Don’t touch anything and don’t move. I need to control this myself,” Hyde quietly instructed the guards as Micky silently listened from across the room. No one had thought to put cancelling cuffs on him. “Don’t bring the bats near the machine and for god sakes don’t try to shoot him if he moves. That’s on him. You might damage the machine or cause it to drain you.”
Head down, Micky smirked to himself. How unfortunate that they hadn’t thought to use cancelling cuffs on him. If he could break away when Hyde was concentrating then maybe, just maybe…
The machine powered on slowly, the hum of energy being fed in echoing off the walls. He kept his head down as he heard Boa pull against the guards on her, yelling Jaejoong’s name. He ignored it, hoping his feigned indifference would calm her, but she fought even more. A glance to Hyde told him he was ignoring everything but the machine and Micky decided to use the distraction.
As the guards were distracted by Boa, the grip on his arms loosened and he moved. He popped up to give the guard on his left an elbow to the face, and the one on his right, a knee to the stomach to bend him over to pound him down over his back. Without a second thought, Micky sprinted toward the machine. He couldn’t get Jaejoong out, but he might be able to save him. Skidding to a stop, Micky climbed up and wrapped his arms around Jaejoong’s legs.
“What are you doing?!” Jaejoong yelled over the machine as Micky held on tight.
“Get him down!” a guard yelled.
“I’m not letting you fight this alone!” Micky answered. “If we use both our power, we can overload the machine and destroy it without dying!”
“But—”
“Stop fighting and help me!” he pleaded and somehow, despite the AA material in contact with Jaejoong’s back, they linked. He could feel Jaejoong’s fear, but his hope outweighed it and encouraged Micky that this crazy plan just might work.
He could hear the guards yelling from behind, but it was all drowned out as the machine reached full power. They felt it begin to pull and together they built up their power, amassing it as he felt the hair on his arms and head stand up. Now—they pushed every ounce of power they’d collected all at once into the machine and knew from the increase in the volume and rattling of the machine, it was all beginning to go wrong. And that was exactly what they wanted.
The rattling turned to shaking as streaks of electrical energy escaped the machine, causing explosions along the walls. Screaming echoed all around them, but suddenly Micky couldn’t even hear it. All of it seemed so far away.
And then, everything went white.
~***~
some of you remembered at the end of the last chapter, Hyde was still lurking around. A+ to you ;D i am actually in the middle of vacation now and today is my last night visiting my hometown~
I also noticed a few people ask 'what documents?' in the comments of the last part. Just to remind you, in 27 they planned for Tiffany and Jiyong split off from Keita and Boa so they could try to find documented evidence of the AO doing experiments with extracting and transferring attributes. I apologize that you probably forgot because the posts have had so much time between them. Sorry~
