Summary: Prequel to Feel and Redefine. This arc encompasses Changmin’s past; how he became a vampire and how he and Junsu met.
Notes: You don’t have to read the other two before you read this, but it would probably be a good idea to have some general vampire myths down.
Disclaimer: Not mine, never were.
Prologue
It wasn’t the biggest ship. It wasn’t the best ship, but it was the ship that Shim Changmin had called home for the last few years of his life. It wasn’t really the most legal ship either and Changmin had known that. He prided himself in being smart enough to help his fellows skirt the law over and over.
After his parents died, Changmin left his relatives to find a job at the docks. Trade brought in a decent amount of money right? How could that go wrong? Maybe it was when he helped that captain from being cheated with his money. Maybe it was when he accepted lunch on the captain’s ship as a token of his gratitude. It was probably when he accepted a position on the ship for being a fast thinker.
More than once, he had helped read maps and plot courses; helped write out documents and forge fakes for the smuggling. He could read, he could write and he could think faster than any of the other dogs on the ship. He could even do so in the foreign languages of the countries near his own, proud that he’d managed to learn them so fast. What else was there to do on a ship at sea? Especially when sometimes they ferried people to other countries and Changmin could practice. The others called him the captain’s pet, a position he actually prided himself in because it earned him respect for his wit. Not to mention if anyone insulted him, they could also answer to his fist before the captain would bother raising a finger. He knew Changmin could defend himself and had done so on a number of occasions.
But now… now he was a prisoner, chained in the dungeon of the Japanese men who had caught their ship. Someone had talked—talked about their operation—quite a successful one at that and had gotten them all iron collars for their trouble. He would find that parrot eventually and put his squawking days to an end.
Changmin pulled his knees up under his chin wishing now that he weren’t quite so tall. His shipmates had commented on his height from time to time, saying he could spot another ship without having to climb up the mast. He’d also gotten other nicknames about being powerful because of his strength and how he was still growing. They said he had lots of potential. He’d show them potential once he was out of here. He was determined to get out and make it on his own. He could do it. For the last week, he’d quietly and carefully observed how things operated in this dungeon and if he was patient, he might be out by the end of the week.
He jumped in surprise when the large metal door opened and the men were leading people in. This had happened a few times and Changmin quickly realized they were picking out slaves. He’d never seen a woman enter the filth of this place before though. He could see the bottom of her sandals as she stepped from the last step and he leaned a bit to try to see who she was. And then Changmin was struck dumb as the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen in his life stood to her full height. She wasn’t tall, but the way she carried herself made her that much more intimidating. She wore a deep purple kimono with birds twining around her body on the fabric, a color he knew to be expensive just by knowing trade goods himself. He was amazed at her deep calculating eyes as she started at the end of the cells, looking at each man in them. Every so often, she would pick out one and they would be pulled out of the cell. Changmin knew she was picking out slaves to buy and wondered if this might be his chance.
When the woman got to his cell, he kept his eyes down, but was so curious that he raised them as she stopped in front of him. When their eyes met, her gaze enveloped him and he was completely lost for a moment, like he was staring into her soul—or maybe she was staring into his, because he saw nothing at all for the time she looked at him. And all in a second, the feeling was gone and she kept moving, picking out slaves here and there. She was smart, he thought. This was probably the cheapest way to get slaves, though could one guarantee the slave wouldn’t escape?
Changmin looked on quietly as they made their way out of the dungeon and the metal door slammed behind them, as if to seal the remaining men’s fate. Changmin found himself thinking it was rather intimidating. It wasn’t until later that afternoon, after they’d been fed… something that another group visited to pick out more slaves. This time, Changmin was picked, much to his pleasure. He could plan an escape now.
When he was lined up with the others chosen, a man in the group of buyers whispered to another as they were being chained. Changmin overheard only because he noticed the man’s eyes on him, asking if he was too old. The other replied something about the master wanting anything good looking and Changmin thinned his lips in disgust. He took a glance at the group he’d been chosen with to see they were all boys, and at sixteen he looked to be the oldest. So they were to be someone’s underage harem? The gall some people had.
But Changmin hung his head so he could smirk to himself.
This escape would be easy!
