Epilogue: memories
Jae stared up at the structure before him in awe.
“Close your mouth, tourist,” Yoochun teased.
Jae shut his mouth with a snap and punched Yoochun in the shoulder, then ran ahead to catch up to Yunho, who wouldn’t tease him. When Yunho put an arm around him, he turned his head back and stuck his tongue out at Yoochun, who glared at him and clung to Junsu instead.
“Yah! What is this?” Junsu pulled him closer and gave him a noogie as Jae laughed and kept walking with his counterpart.
“Watch the sunglasses!” Yoochun whined as Jae adjusted his own. Yunho stopped and tipped his sunglasses up for a moment as he took a look up at the structure.
“Never thought I’d ever see Tokyo Tower in my lifetime,” he said softly before he replaced the sunglasses, but Jae did see the telltale signs of his eyes shining in the light. For some reason, Yunho’s eyes would shine a soft gold color in the sunlight, but not the way they would glow when he transformed. They all found it curious, especially Rain who took a few samples as he and Hyori oohed and aahed over them. Jae smiled as they began to move again. He didn’t care what color Yunho’s eyes were, as long as he got to see them.
His first year of college had gone surprisingly quickly. Actually, all six years had, now that he thought back on it. Two years in, Heechul and Shiwon went on a traveling spree around the world, while the other five stayed with Hyori and Rain on the east coast. Jae enjoyed his college years, even if he didn’t party the way he had a feeling his classmates might have expected him to. He tended not to make friends with many of them anyway. Not that he didn’t want to, but he didn’t really want anyone missing him once he was gone and off the map again. He regretted it a bit, but he treasured what he had waiting at home more.
He would write his father letters and emails, and was carefully weaning his family in Korea down by corresponding with them less and less. Sometimes he wondered if his mother noticed. With what would end up going on in her life, she might have forgotten about him anyway. Jae felt bad about having to make them forget him, but he wouldn’t forget what they taught him. Besides, he was adopted to begin with. He might have tried to connect with his birth family someday anyway. But still, he would feel a pang of guilt when one of his sisters would try to contact him and he had to ignore the email for a few weeks.
But that wasn’t why he was in Japan. No, that was because of the cryptic email Junsu had received a month back, asking him to come and visit.
“It’s from Namie,” he’d said. Yoochun looked thoughtful, Yunho looked confused, Changmin frowned and Kumi practically jumped for joy. With a bit of trepidation on Junsu’s part, he finally booked a trip for the whole family and soon, Jae was looking down on Tokyo from one of its best observatories.
“Think we could climb it?” Yoochun nudged Changmin, who grinned back.
“Don’t even think about it,” Hyori hissed, “until after sunset.”
Jae had a feeling they considered that a challenge.
“You must be Jaejoong.”
Jae turned to see a young man about his height with large sunglasses on. He pulled them off to gesture at Jae’s hair with them.
“I can tell by the impressive hairstyle,” the man—vampire, he knew now—let his eyes rest in that spot.
Jae glanced upward and remembered he’d spiked his blonde hair up today. “And you are?”
A smirk appeared before he spoke in Japanese. “A messenger from Amuro-san. My name is Tachibana Keita. I’m here to find Junsu.”
Jaejoong jerked his thumb toward the young man ooh-ing and aah-ing over the view as he took various pictures. “Over there.”
“Thanks,” Keita replied with a nod as he approached the other vampire.
Jaejoong sighed as he walked away and commended himself for deciding to take Japanese language classes in college. At least now he got to use them.
“Who’s that?” Yoochun asked over his shoulder, resting his chin on it.
“Messenger,” Jae replied simply.
Junsu approached them once the messenger had left and shrugged. “We’re to go to this address after sunset,” he told them and held out a piece of paper.
Jae glanced over it. “Shibuya?” Junsu nodded as they all looked at one another.
“All of us?” Yoochun asked as Junsu nodded again.
“You bought her something before we left, right?” Changmin asked.
“Of course!” Junsu put his fists on his hips and huffed. “I’m not that stupid!”
Changmin laughed and ruffled his hair. “Are you sure you packed it?”
“Jaejoong helped me,” Junsu grumbled as Changmin leaned closer and quietly promised to make it up to him. Somehow Jae wanted to make sure his promise was kept. He said would willingly be a witness.
Flirtations were cut short as Rain pointed out that the sun was setting and they all turned to watch. Jae almost wished he could take his sunglasses off to watch, but the sun was bright enough as it was. He leaned on the counter as Yoochun took up residence next to him, and Yunho leaned on his back to keep him quite warm as they admired the horizon.
Yoochun nudged him. “Hm?” he asked.
“I think we redefined relationship, don’t you guys?” he murmured with a little smile as he watched the sunset.
Jae glanced back at Yunho who grinned. What made Yoochun say it, they would never know, but they couldn’t agree more. Once the sun was about halfway down, Jae felt a kiss pressed to the back of his neck as his heart jumped in his chest. He made a mental note to pay Yunho back for that once they were at the hotel later on.
When the sun dipped down and the light on the horizon began to fade, the group made their way out of the tower and quickly slipped through the streets and back to the hotel so Junsu could pick up the gift for his old friend. As Jae was helping Junsu sift through their bags, he froze for a moment as his eyes went out of focus. Jae paused as a frown touched Junsu’s brows.
“Junsu?”
“Hm?” the vampire blinked and glanced over.
“Did you see something?” he asked quietly.
“Ah, I don’t know.” The frown deepened before he shook it off and pulled the box with their gift out of the luggage. “I’m sure it’ll make sense later.”
Jae shrugged. “Okay.”
Before he knew it, Jae was walking into a business building somewhere in the Shibuya district after enjoying watching girls with various crazy fashions skip past. He shook his head at a girl riding a bike with a rather short skirt and followed everyone inside.
“How long has it been?” Changmin asked as the receptionist immediately took them to an elevator.
“Too long,” Junsu replied as everyone piled into the elevator. As the elevator ascended, that little frown was back on his forehead, but Jae kept his silence. If Junsu wanted them to know, he would have said something. Once at the proper floor, a new receptionist led them through the hallway to a large meeting room.
Jae followed Changmin and Junsu in as they greeted Namie and she hugged Kumi tightly. They exchanged pleasantries before the rest of the family was introduced and it seemed like Jae and Yunho were the only ones who hadn’t yet met this Namie. Jae had to assume she was also a vampire and by the feeling he got from her, Jae guessed she was very old, but enduring, if this building was any hint. She had to be heading something that kept her life comfortable.
“How did you meet, if you don’t mind my asking?” Yunho directed his question at Changmin.
Namie smiled as Changmin rubbed the back of his neck. “Well, it’s all Junsu really,” he said with a chuckle. “Junsu was the one who got me out of Kame’s coven and brought me to Amuro-san’s estate at the time. For taking away the asset of Kame’s truth seer, Amuro-san granted Junsu a reward and let us recover on her property before we left on our own.”
Jae glanced over to see that Junsu wasn’t listening at all. He was staring at the sofa with that little frown on his brow again. Whatever he saw, it was important and he knew it, but he didn’t know why. Jae wished he knew what Junsu had seen.
That’s when Jae noticed another feeling to his side and glanced back to see that his shields had picked up another vampire in the room. Down a ways on another sofa sat another young vampire, watching the greetings take place. Jae tilted his head curiously to see the vampire smile a little and somehow, Jae felt he looked familiar.
“Junsu, who is that?” Jae asked as he tapped Junsu’s shoulder and pointed at the other vampire.
“I don’t…” Junsu trailed off as his gaze caught that of the stranger and he exhaled sharply as his eyes went round and wide.
Jae frowned at the reaction as worry hit him. “Junsu?”
The vampire gasped as his eyes stared into nothing and though it was only a few seconds, Jae felt like it had been an entire ten minutes that Junsu was gone from the world. Junsu blinked repeatedly as if trying to clear his eyes as Changmin moved closer and asked if he was alright. Junsu gripped Changmin’s arm and ignored the question as he looked up to catch the stranger’s gaze again.
Jae looked to the other vampire to see him stand and slowly close the gap between them, his eyes glued to those of Junsu. The steps and look from the vampire weren’t menacing or threatening, but despite there being nothing between them, Jae bit his lip in worry, wondering just what exactly was coming next.
Junsu took a step forward as his expression turned anxious, maybe even scared as he said one word.
“Junho?”
Relief flooded through the stranger’s expression and he smiled as Junsu gasped in surprise, his hand flying to his mouth as he stared in disbelief.
“Junsu? Do you know this man?” Changmin asked carefully, trying to calm him.
Junsu nodded vigorously as tears rolled down his cheeks. “He’s my brother. My twin brother, Junho!” He let go of Changmin’s arm to pull his brother into a hug as Junho embraced him just as tightly back as Jae saw the tears in Junho’s eyes. He could see it now, the resemblance in the facial features. No wonder he looked so familiar.
Junsu pulled back suddenly and looked at his brother’s face in confusion. “How…”
Junho glanced down. “I was nearly killed when I was eighteen. A coven leader took pity on me and changed me to take me in.”
“I can’t believe it,” Junsu breathed as he looked his brother up and down.
“There was a bit of an uprising in my coven recently and the leader was killed,” Junho told him. “I’ve been looking for you since I left.”
“Do you know—”
“I did it.” Junho cut him off
Junsu blinked and stared. “You…”
“A few years after I was turned, I heard other vampires talking about how they thought they were crazy until they were turned and they realized they had special powers.” Junho bit his lip in worry. “I thought if there was any chance for you to live a normal—well, semi-normal—life, I should take it. I couldn’t leave you in that asylum. So I kidnapped you and turned you. I took you to my old friend, Lee Junghyun because she owed me.”
Junsu sat down on one of the sofas—hard—as he tried to take it all in.
“Are you angry with me?” Junho asked as he kneeled in front of his brother. “I didn’t want to see you being treated the way you were in that asylum. And I was the only one who ever visited you. Mother and Father were too scared they would catch whatever you had and…” he trailed off as Junsu held up a hand.
“I’m not mad,” he clarified and smiled a little. “Just… surprised to find out that it was my own brother who turned me. But why didn’t you stay with me?”
Junho sighed and glanced away. “The coven I was taken into was good to me, but I couldn’t trust the leader. Though I’d heard about people with powers, I also knew that he exploited them. So I took you to Junghyun instead.”
“But you came back. I remember seeing you,” Junsu replied.
“I came back some time after to see if you actually had a power and to see if you were adjusting all right. When Junghyun told me you had foresight… I got scared,” Junho admitted as he shook his head. “Your foresight was so powerful, and I couldn’t let my master get a hold of you, so I left immediately.”
“You were trying to protect me,” Junsu finished.
Junho nodded. “I knew you would be okay if you stayed away from the covens and no one could use you. Junghyun was a lone wolf so I knew she would teach you the advantages and disadvantages to them.”
“I probably wouldn’t have joined one anyway,” Junsu mumbled. “I never could drink human blood.”
Junho smiled and patted his twin’s shouler. “You were always a softie.”
“Getting reacquainted?” Namie asked from a comfy chair off to the side.
“I see why you said to come as soon as possible,” Junsu replied with a smile. “Did you know about Junho?”
“Not until he came to me asking for you,” she answered. “I was surprised because I thought he was you at first, and then he demanded to know how I knew you,” she paused as she smiled suddenly. “We bargained for him to work for me and in return, I would contact you so that you two could finally meet.”
Junsu smiled softly. “Thank you.” Tears slid down his cheeks again as he moved closer and she stood. The two embraced before he took her hands and squeezed them. “I’ve never gotten to hug you before, but I’m glad I got the chance today. You’ve done so much for me.”
Namie smiled softly and reached up to touch his cheek. “I felt like I owed it to you.”
“How? I’ve only ever owed you.” Junsu seemed confused as she looked to Changmin.
“Sometimes I wonder if it was my fault that Changmin was taken by Kame,” she said softly.
Jae blinked as everyone murmured in confusion at the confession and Namie gently pushed Junsu’s hands down.
“I almost bought him when I saw him in the prison, but I could tell from his determined expression that he would only escape or rebel in my service. I knew he would escape the prison fairly quickly, so I passed over him,” she told him as everyone else seemed to get even more confused.
“It’s not your fault,” Changmin said as he stepped forward. “Maybe because of you, I was able to meet Junsu and eventually find all of these people.”
Namie chuckled. “When did you become an incurable optimist?”
“Learned from the best,” he said with a nod at Junsu which made the other vampire smile brightly.
“So, will you come back with us?” Junsu asked his brother.
Junho shook his head. “I still have to pay Amuro-san for her generosity. Also, I kind of like it here working for her.” Something told Jae it might be something more than that.
Changmin tilted his head at Namie who gave him a level stare for good measure. Understanding the ‘mind your own damn business’ look, Jae concentrated to see that Junho’s and Namie’s auras seemed to blend a bit. He didn’t know her well, but it seemed she’d taken a liking to Junsu’s twin.
Junsu nodded. “We can come visit,” he replied, not noticing a thing.
“Why don’t you go celebrate?” Namie suggested. “I have some things I need to finish. You could take them up to the club,” she glanced at Junho, who nodded.
“Sounds good,” he replied with a smile and gestured to the door. Everyone said their farewells as Namie moved to another room and they left to the elevator. As he hit the button on the wall, Junho explained that there was a bar and club built on the top few floors of the building for them to relax in. Jae felt like this day was getting better and better. He tossed a smirk at Yoochun who returned it as Yunho rolled his eyes.
When they arrived, Jae cast his gaze around to decide that it was well designed and the low lights kept the attention on them to a minimum. The group situated themselves in a round booth to relax and have some drinks together. Jae couldn’t help but smirk when he saw that the Bloody Mary actually came with blood. After getting acquainted with Junho and talking for some time, Jae excused himself to get another drink from the bar.
“Fancy meeting you here.”
Jae turned from the counter to see the vampire who’d named himself as Keita sitting on one of the high chairs. “You work for Namie.”
“I do.” He nodded and took a sip from what looked like a rum and coke.
Jae slipped into the chair next to Keita as he waited for his drink. “What do you do?”
“I see you’ve met Keita,” Junho said as he stopped next to them, Junsu with him. “He’s one of our best messengers.” The way he said it sounded like ‘assassins’ to Jae.
“Is that so? Good at anything else?” Jae fished as the others surrounded them.
Keita polished off his drink and tossed them a devious smile. “Might be. Want to have a little fun? I could show you what’s interesting around here.”
Jae’s lips curved into a grin and he glanced up at Yoochun who raised an interested eyebrow and Yunho who smirked as if it were a challenge.
“I think we could swing that.”
