Part 8
“I beg your pardon?” You looked up at Ren, who had been talking to himself again.
“I’m sorry, did I say something wrong?” the servant asked anxiously.
“My father thinks I like men?” He stared at Ren as the man started to laugh. “What’s so funny?”
“You don’t like men?” he asked as he kept folding clothing.
“To be perfectly honest, I’d never thought about it before.” You looked down at the letter he’d been writing to his father and made a mental note to tell his father to stop telling people about what he thought his dating preferences were. “Out of curiosity, why does he say that?”
Ren shrugged. “He said you never showed any interest in girls. He told me you were always talking about how well you got along with another guy.”
“Oh,” You looked away, a blush spreading on his cheeks. Do I like other guys?
“You’ve honestly never thought about it?” the red head asked.
“No, I was always too busy helping my father with his farmland until last year when we finally made enough money to hire on help and my father got further into his chemistry hobby.” You leaned his head on his hands and sighed. “I’ve never even taken anyone out on a date.” How pathetic was that? Never dated. It’s not like it really mattered anyway. You didn’t like any of the girls in the town because all they wanted was his body. Men were another matter altogether. He thought it was polite to look away when he saw someone half naked, but he’d always thought being embarrassed about it though, was a bit much. The young man realized Ren was silent and looked up to see the servant staring at him. “What?”
“You’re a virgin?”
You shot him a glare as he went red. “Shut up.”
“Have you ever kissed anyone?”
Was it possible for him to get any redder? “No.” Well, there was that one time he kissed that boy before his parents moved away and—“Oh god, I kissed a guy!” he exclaimed in shock. He’d never counted it before because it was with another boy, and all the other boys only ever told how many kisses with girls they’d gotten. In fact, he’d been too embarrassed to tell a soul about it because he’d liked it and made himself forget.
“You did?” Ren hurried closer as the blonde buried his face in his hands.
“I can’t believe I forgot about that!” You said muffled into his hands. “That was right before Namie started chasing after me because that stupid lord’s son rejected her. You’d think I could remember something like that.”
“I bet it was incredibly traumatic,” the amused servant replied sarcastically.
“It was not! It was…nice,” You blushed again as he recalled the experience. The warmth of another person’s lips on his had been pleasant. He almost wished he could feel it again at that very moment.
Hiromi burst into the room. “Youuuu!”
The two jumped and looked at her as if she was crazy. You put a hand on his chest, wondering if she’d heard the conversation.
“You haven’t gone outside since you got here! And I never gave you a tour, so we’re going now!” she proclaimed and came over to tug on his arm.
“What made you think of this?” he asked in bewilderment.
“I was washing the windows in my room and thought to myself that you might like the scenery.” She smiled. “Is your leg up to the challenge of a short walk?”
“As long as you don’t mind helping me a little, I don’t see why not.” You pushed back from the table and stood. “Wanna come?” he asked the red head.
“No, but I do want to hear more about your, uh, childhood again sometime.” He flashed a smile before stealing away into the blonde’s bedroom with the folded clothing.
You wanted to kill him for the comment, but followed Hiromi out of the room instead. She led him to the back of the castle and out a back entry and showed him around the grounds. When she showed him the stable, he couldn’t help but ask if the horses were cursed as well. Hiromi laughed and said only the people were cursed. The animals of the land were left untouched. After showing him the gardens, Hiromi led You out to a spire built into the wall at the back of the castle. She convinced him to go up in it with her and she helped him up the stairs all the way to the top.
“Gackt comes here a lot to be alone and think,” she told him as they looked out over the land. You noted that he would never want to fall from the tower because just past the castle wall, there was a deep cliff that would have even the bravest of knees knocking. “He usually comes at night and gazes at the stars and moon. He brought me here one night when I was sick and taught me some of the constellations.”
“He brought you here?” You asked surprised.
Hiromi smiled. “It was before the curse happened. After that, he brought me up a lot, teaching me more and showing me how to use his telescope.” She pointed at the object, sitting off to the side of the area. “Sometimes Hyde was with us too. They were so fun to be around.”
“So, you were friends with him when you were younger?” You leaned on the wall and gazed out over the tree line.
“Well, it felt like I was a lot younger at the time, but now it doesn’t seem like so much.” She chuckled suddenly. “I never fell in love with him like some of the other girls here. He always felt like a big brother to me. What do you think of him?”
The question surprised You and he laughed lightly. “I’m not sure what to think of him. Even though he scared me when I first met him, I’ve learned a lot about him. I think he’s a kind, caring person who’s trying to make up for something he did wrong.” He smiled as he looked out over the landscape and Hiromi leaned on the wall next to him. “I like him, a lot.”
“Me too.” She smiled. “He’s such a nice guy.”
“Yeah.”
~***~
“Argyle socks?”
“Yeah, my dad loves those stupid things.” You laughed as Gackt rolled his eyes as if to say he would. “What about your parents?”
“Hm? Mine?” He smiled when You nodded.
“They can’t be all that bad.” The young man was very curious to know what Gackt’s parents were like, since he’d never met them.
“They’re not, just annoying, as parents can be,” he told the blonde. “My mother used to always like having tea and crumpets, because she used to play tea with her toys when she was younger. My father doesn’t really do anything weird. He’s quite normal.” He laughed when You gave a look of disappointment.
The young man sighed and took a sip of his wine. He was hoping there was something funny that gave Gackt his odd sense of humor. Maybe it was the servants, because he knew that sometimes noble children were raised by servants more than their parents. You nibbled on his lip. Was that the reason Gackt had fought with his parents so much? Maybe they just didn’t know or understand one another enough.
“You want to know about the fight we had, don’t you?”
The blonde jumped in surprise. “You can’t read my mind, can you?”
Gackt shook his head. “No. I had a feeling you’d been thinking about it though, since you brought up the subject of parents.”
“Cha told me you guys had a huge fight that changed you.” The blonde hid behind his wine, hoping he hadn’t upset the other man. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.”
“We fought about something stupid,” he stated evenly, staring into the fire they sat next to. “At the time, I thought it was something important, but it ended up being something trivial. I was so angry at finding that out that I decided to change and become perfect to make my parents happy,” he muttered bitterly. “They didn’t realize that my obsession with perfection would turn me into a monster. And eventually, literally.”
You shrank back against the chair behind him. He felt bad for bringing up such an awful memory for the vampire. He was surprised that Gackt didn’t look angry about it. As he’d told the short story, he’d just gazed peacefully into the fire, his eyes blending in with the yellow flames again. Maybe looking into the fire calmed him.
“I’m glad we fought,” Gackt said suddenly. “If we hadn’t, I never would have met you.”
A silent gasp slipped through You’s lips as the vampire turned and smiled at him. He didn’t know why, but his body froze and his heart started to beat fast. He tried to calm himself, knowing Gackt could sense his heartbeat. Why did he react that way to the vampire’s smile? It was just a smile. He realized the vampire was staring at him and didn’t know what to do.
“Is something the matter?”
You watched his lips move as he spoke. Though he knew Gackt’s lips wouldn’t be as warm as the ones he’d kissed years before, he still had the urge to lean close and kiss them. You bit his own lip and suppressed the thought before it could get away from him. “I’m fine,” he finally answered and looked at his glass. “Could you get me some water? I think the wine is going to my head,” he chuckled nervously.
“Sure.” Gackt got up and moved away to the bathroom as You collected his thoughts. He hit his forehead with the ball of his hand and leaned his head back on the seat of the chair. He hoped he wouldn’t do any more stupid things tonight. Randomly, he envisioned himself jumping the poor vampire and kissing him. What in the world was he thinking? That wouldn’t help the vampire to trust him in the least.
“Thank you,” You said when Gackt appeared at his side and handed him a glass of water. He took a few swallows then sipped at it as the vampire sat down beside him. The movement was unnoticed until Gackt leaned close to put an ear on You’s chest, unnerving him.
“Are you sure you’re okay? I swear your heart is beating faster than usual.”
“You must be extremely sensitive to it to be able to hear that,” You mumbled as he took another sip. He wished the vampire would get his head off of his chest.
“I can hear yours extremely clear,” Gackt said as he pushed the chair behind You back, causing him to fall. The blonde blinked when his head didn’t hit the floor and realized that the vampire’s hand was under it. He felt very vulnerable as Gackt listened to his heart.
“Wh-what are you doing?” he asked, glancing down at the other.
“I can’t hear my servants’ hearts because I’m not allowed to drink their blood. That’s why they’re protected by their powers.” He turned his head to listen with the other ear so that You could see his face, his eyes glowing red. “I haven’t heard it in a while, so the sound is a little intoxicating.”
“Intoxicating?” You swallowed and hoped the vampire didn’t suddenly have a taste for his blood. The blonde could see the sharp teeth that had grown in his mouth. It was scaring him, but at the same time, it was exciting. He pushed the thought of it being exciting away. Why in the world would it be exciting?
“Un,” Gackt nodded and sat up, letting the young man do the same. “Did I scare you?” he asked, his eyes and teeth back to normal.
“The teeth are a little frightening.” Despite admitting this, You asked, “Can I see them again?”
Gackt looked surprised at the request. You watched as the red crept back into Gackt’s eyes and he parted his lips to let the young man watch the two third teeth from the center grow to sharp points. His mouth snapped shut, making the blonde jump as he looked away, his eyes going back to yellow. “I’ve never done that for anyone before.”
You took a deep breath and rubbed his leg, having jarred it when he jumped back. “Does… does it hurt?”
“What?” Gackt looked back to him.
“Does it hurt when you change? What does it feel like?” You asked, very curious now that Gackt was opening up to him more.
“I… No, it doesn’t hurt at all.” The vampire smiled a little. “You really want to know about this?”
You nodded vigorously. “I’ve never seen this for real before.”
“You’re an odd sort.” Gackt laughed. “What else do you want to know?”
“Well, there’s this one thing I’ve been meaning to ask…”
“Yes?”
“Can you fly?”
Gackt laughed loudly at the question. “Yes.”
“Really?”
He nodded. “If I feel the need.”
“How?”
“I can manifest wings.”
You stared enthralled. “Can I see them?”
“Maybe some other time,” the vampire replied to his disappointment. “Any other questions?”
“Yes!”
