Part 6

Gackt sighed as he changed his bloodstained clothing. One couldn’t really tell with black, but he could smell it, and he didn’t want to. He threw the dirty clothing into the corner and walked into his bathroom. He stepped into the already running shower to wash off the blood that had managed to penetrate his clothing and get on his skin. It happened often, but just because he was used to it didn’t mean he had to like it

“Gackt?” Cha called from his master’s bedroom.

“Nnh?” He replied from the shower as he turned it off, finally feeling clean.

“I think he likes you.”

Gackt scoffed and opened the shower to step out and grab a towel from the wall. He wiped the water off of his body and wrapped the towel around himself as he wandered back out into the bedroom. “Likes me?”

“Well, he didn’t want you to leave. He could have chosen me to cling to, or even Hiromi, but he chose you,” Cha pointed out as he pulled clothing out of Gackt’s wardrobe.

“I don’t see why.” The vampire sat on his bed and laid back. “I must have scared him half to death.” He growled when his servant threw a pair of pants on his head and pulled them off to look at them. “What the hell is this?” he asked annoyed as he sat up.

“Pants,” Cha stated simply and kept digging for a shirt.

Gackt rolled his eyes and glared at them. “They’re blue.”

“Navy blue.”

“Whatever,” he growled.

“Maybe you should start to include color in your wardrobe,” the blonde told him. “You never know, it might look good.”

“I want black.”

“No,” Cha replied as the vampire’s head was pelted with a shirt, deep red this time. “I’ve put up with you for over two decades. I’m allowed to tell you what I like and don’t like. Besides, they’re not bright or anything. They’re very subdued, dark colors, just for you.”

Gackt rolled his eyes as the blonde rambled on, giving him crap about his attitude. He didn’t bother to get a pair of underwear out and just slipped into the slacks and the shirt. For a moment, he stood and listened to Cha babble again. Unfortunately, he hadn’t been listening while getting dressed and the man was on a different topic now, so he didn’t even know what he was talking about.

“Cha.”

“Hm?”

“Order new furniture for the west wing?” he told the blonde and turned to walk out, hoping the man wasn’t too surprised by the sudden request.

~***~

You woke when the dull throb in his leg became a shooting pain. He cracked an eye open to see Hiromi rearranging his foot. She was being extremely careful, but she couldn’t know what hurt and what didn’t. You kept his mouth shut as he watched her until she was finished. She smiled at him and squeezed his little toe with a wink. The action made him smile a little, the pain dissipating.

“How are you feeling?”

You glanced to his left to see Gackt sitting in a chair, a book open in his lap. “Nnnh, about as good as someone with a wolf bite can feel, I guess.”

“I’m glad to see you’ve been taking good care of the guitar I gave you,” Gackt said quietly as he set his book on the bedside table. “I wasn’t surprised to see your violin in such good condition as well.”

“I would play every night for my father to settle him for bed,” You said, not really knowing why he was telling the vampire this.

“I see. No wonder I would hear it every night at sunset,” Gackt replied in amusement. “Everyone is sad that you can’t come down to dinner now, since you just got comfortable with us. All of the young ladies are pouting all over the castle.”

You smiled a little. “It was nice to have dinner with everyone.”

“I’ll eat with you from now on.”

“Really?” He turned to look at the vampire and frowned when he noticed that the man wasn’t wearing black this time, but rather darker shades of blue and red. He raised an eyebrow—this was an interesting development.

“Yes, and I was wondering if we could talk alone for a little bit.” Gackt wasn’t looking at him, but rather the fireplace on the opposite wall. You wondered why he was avoiding his gaze.

“Sure.” You felt a little uneasy about the request, not understanding why they needed to be alone. He watched as the vampire moved to ask the few servants in the room to leave and shut the door. Maybe Gackt was going to finally punish him for wandering where he wasn’t supposed to be and running away.

“Would you mind if we sat down by the fire?” the vampire asked quietly.

The blonde stared at him. He was being nice? “I thought you were going to punish me.”

Gackt gave him a look of surprise and glanced down at his leg for a moment. “I think you’ve been punished enough.”

You turned blushed and replied quietly. “Yeah, we can sit by the fire.” He waited as Gackt came around the bed and pulled the blanket back. The vampire slipped his arms under You’s back and legs before carefully lifting him from the bed, slowly carrying him over to the fire. He could tell Gackt was trying to be gentle and ignored any pain that appeared from the movement. The blonde did feel somewhat embarrassed, being carried across the room by another person. He felt the blood rush to his face as he went red again, glad that Gackt was the only one that would see him feeling so self-conscious.

The vampire lowered You onto the rug in front of the fire and asked if he needed a blanket, but the young man turned him down. The fire was quite warm on its own. You was surprised when Gackt sat cross legged in front of him and put his injured leg into his lap.

“So,” Gackt started quietly. “You’ve seen what I am now.”

You glanced away at the fire, not completely sure he wanted to remember what Gackt had looked like last night.

“I’m sorry you had to see that. Sometimes the bloodlust pushes me to do things that I would never do if I had more control. I know that it’s a revolting sight.”

“It’s not your fault,” You murmured. “I’m sorry for trying to run away.”

“Don’t apologize. It was my fault.” He sighed. “I wish I could have some cake.”

“Excuse me?” You stared at the vampire who smiled in amusement.

“I was just thinking about how lucky you are. You get to eat food and I can’t. Well, I can, but it doesn’t taste right,” Gackt explained. “My body craves blood so when I drink it, my body is refreshed and tells me that it’s good, but after so many years, it still feels wrong in the back of my mind. Sometimes, I just wish I could gorge myself on spaghetti or sweets. It’s amazing the little things you realize you took for granted.”

“Yeah, like walking,” the blonde replied with a smile, happy to hear Gackt laugh. “You know, it’s weird. I should be afraid of you, but you’re the only person that I’ve ever felt this comfortable with besides my father. I mean, I’m imprisoned here by you, I shouldn’t feel like we’re friends, should I?”

The question obviously troubled the vampire, because he lapsed into a silence. You’s feelings were troubling him. Gackt had been cruel to him, but only because he had to keep his curse a secret. The curse probably had to be lifted by Gackt without anyone else’s help, but You had felt the urge to help him as much as he could. He didn’t understand why he wanted to help someone who had imprisoned him. But that thought conflicted with the fact that Gackt was trying to change and become a better person. He didn’t know what to think, and all this thinking was making his head hurt!

“I don’t want you to feel like you’re imprisoned, but that’s just how it is, isn’t it?” Gackt mumbled as he stared into the fire. His eyes looked as if they were on fire as well, the yellow color blending with the reflected flames.

“I like it here,” You said as he looked into the fire as well. There were a lot of people, all of them liked him and never said anything bad about his father because they didn’t think he was crazy. They were all kind and he liked to help them out, finding that there was an abundance of things to do around the castle because it was so large. “The guys in the town hate me because all the girls are lovesick for me, and all the girls who followed me around liked me for my looks. And everyone in the town thinks that my father is crazy.”

“Crazy?” Gackt finally turned his eyes away from the fire.

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

“Because he likes to practice with chemistry. He tends to blow himself up a lot,” You explained as Gackt chuckled.

“People tend to fear what they don’t understand. You understand me, so you’re not afraid of me,” the vampire said quietly and turned his attention back to the fire.

You smiled a little. He definitely wasn’t afraid of this man. He was a little fearful of his power if he was angered, but not by the man beneath the curse. If they had met as children, You was confident that they would have been best friends.

The blonde leaned back on the chair behind him as they lapsed into a comfortable silence. He noticed Gackt’s thumb lightly rubbing the side of his foot and noted that he seemed to be doing it absentmindedly, because he looked deep in thought. His features looked almost normal in the warm firelight and reminded You of the man he’d seen last night before the effect wore off. You suspected that the curse was to force Gackt to feed in order to look the way he had before. The fact that Gackt gave up his fixation on perfection made You respect him. If he wasn’t a good person, he’d be out there drinking up the blood of every living thing right this moment. He was glad that Gackt was sitting here with him in front of the fire instead of out drinking his fill. He liked the way Gackt looked in the warm light; he was very handsome.

Er, where had that come from? But it was true, wasn’t it? The vampire himself was very handsome, and You found himself gazing at Gackt. He wasn’t just handsome though, he was beautiful.

Gackt glanced over. “Hm?”

“N-nothing,” You stammered, embarrassed to be caught staring at him. The vampire raised a disbelieving eyebrow before looking back to the fire. The blonde breathed out a very silent sigh of relief. What was he thinking? Beautiful? He berated himself for even thinking that.

Just as suddenly as his thumb had started moving, it stopped. You was sort of disappointed when it stopped; it was comforting and felt nice. He glanced away to the fire just as his thumb started to move again and the gentle touch caused You to shiver in reply.

“Cold?” Gackt asked.

You shook his head. Even though he didn’t have a shirt on, the fire kept him quite warm, but he thought a shirt would be really nice about now. He felt a little uncomfortable sitting there half naked with a vampire stroking his foot with a thumb. It sounded like some terrible pornographic story.

“Then what’s the matter?”

“Nothing is the matter.”

Gackt finally looked away from the fire and straight at him. “I can feel your heart beating.”

Oh crap. He was a vampire, why hadn’t he thought of that? “Y-your um…” You pointed at Gackt’s hand on his foot and the vampire pulled it away as if he’d been burned.

“I’m sorry, did I hurt you?” he asked concerned.

“No, nothing of the sort, it’s just…” You couldn’t bring himself to say it. Why did this make him so nervous? Gackt stared at him as You’s eyes darted away and back—what was he supposed to do? He frowned in confusion when the master smiled a little. A shiver ran through him as Gackt caressed the side of his foot again. He blushed deeply as Gackt laughed lightly.

“Do you have a foot fetish?” he asked, still touching the blonde’s foot.

“No,” the nervous man blurted out and looked away.

Gackt stopped, still smiling and patted his foot. “It’s probably sensitive from your injuries,” he said.

You just glowered at the floor embarrassed. He heard Gackt chuckle as the man put his foot on the floor and moved closer. “Why did you do that?”

“Are you mad?”

“I’m embarrassed,” You said flustered.

Gackt laughed. “You know, I haven’t smiled or laughed this much for a while.”

“Glad to be your source of entertainment,” the blonde grumbled. He felt the vampire moved closer and sniff as You flinched, hoping he wouldn’t shiver again.

“You smell. You need a bath.”

You glared at him and then at the fire. What was his deal tonight? “Are you making fun of me? You’re like a completely different person now.”

“Sorry, it’s just that I don’t get to tease anyone very often. Everyone here knows me too well and I’m not usually in this good of a mood.” Gackt squeezed his shoulder. “I won’t be too mean, I promise. But you still smell.”

You huffed as the vampire got up and went to the door, calling for You’s servant Hiromi. “Why do I deserve to be the butt of the joke?” he grumbled and shifted on the floor as he heard Gackt ask Hiromi to draw a bath. The young man froze—he was serious?
