When that certain someone comes to a gallery he participates in, Jaejoong never expects him to agree to the hasty proposition he jokingly offers.

1 | 2 | 3: in which ignorance could be bliss?

Jaejoong plunked down at the kitchen table and didn’t really feel the thunk he heard when his head hit the tabletop, grunting despite this.

“I thought you went to bed before me?” Micky asked from the sink.

Jaejoong felt a wet nose on his forehead, then a lick, and cracked open an eye to see Harang watching him with curiosity. “What’s he doing in here?” he asked as he reached out to scratch Harang between his ears.

“I was going to take him on a run, but I forgot my iPod so I had to come back,” Micky explained as Jaejoong saw something moving behind Harang and assumed it was his tail. He couldn’t see much without his glasses or contacts. “Wanna come?”

“Hm?” Jaejoong rubbed his tired eyes and yawned.

“Forget it,” Micky replied, on the verge of laughter, but Jaejoong ignored it. “What kept you up so late?”

“Paper,” Jaejoong replied without missing a beat. Technically, it was true. Only… he’d had the rough draft open in the evening after he’d gotten home from work. Normally it would take him two or three hours to polish it up to the potential for turning it in. But when he clicked on his recent documents, he noticed a picture in the list and clicked on it without thinking to bring up the picture he’d taken last week of the young man in the forest. Curiosity kept the picture open in a window and Jaejoong wondered why he’d never noticed that the guy in the picture had such nice arms.

Sometime later, Micky had burst into the room and Jaejoong automatically minimized the window with the picture in it. He didn’t want it to look like he was obsessing over some guy he’d never met before. Not that this actually helped anything. Micky grabbed whatever it was he had wanted, complimented the drawing Jaejoong was working on and left just as quickly as he’d come in. Jaejoong had smacked his forehead when he realized he’d been drawing the young man. He’d spent half the night trying to finish it and this was why the work on his paper was pushed back.

At least Harang didn’t care about his human problems. He smiled as he teased Harang with his hand to watch the dog snap playfully at his fingers. “Did you stop that day so I could take that picture?” Harang barked as if to say yes and Jaejoong chuckled. Only a dog would be so smart.

“Hm?” Micky asked as he approached.

“Nothing,” Jaejoong replied as he sat up and stretched with a yawn. “Starbucks tonight?”

“Damn right. It’s au pair night,” Micky said as he hooked the leash to Harang’s collar, having just referred to how rich families in the area let their nannies out to mingle with each other one night a week and tonight just happened to be the night.

Jaejoong snorted. “You’ll trip people with your grease leaking out all over.”

“Believe it!” Micky waggled his eyebrows as Jaejoong laughed. “You better go shower or you’re gonna be late.”

Jaejoong squinted at the microwave clock and bid Micky farewell as he retreated to the bathroom, skipping his morning workout for the day. The shower woke him up the rest of the way and before he knew it he was dressed and combing his hair in front of the mirror. It wasn’t long before he had everything packed into his sidebag and was heading down to the bus stop. He zoned out to music during the ride and trudged his way to his digital design class in the third floor of the art building. The climb really wasn’t so bad when the walls of the stairwell were lined with paint and art that had been installed—painted, taped and stapled up—a few years back when one of the older students decided the stairwells didn’t inspire a desire to climb the stairs. Jaejoong could only grin. The stairwells weren’t full yet, but he enjoyed passing some of his previous projects as he climbed.

By the time he reached the classroom, he was bobbing his head to the beat of his music and a few classmates greeted him soundlessly. It was probably clear from the fact that they could hear his music that he wouldn’t be able to hear them. His tablemate Boa leaned to the side and looked down as he pulled his headphones down around his neck.

“Nice boots,” she commented before going back to her sketchbook.

Jaejoong glanced down at his pants tucked into a pair of black lace-up boots and grinned. “Thanks. Really comfortable too.”

“Be glad they’re not heels,” she replied and held out a leg to show him her boots that bore two inch heels.

“Those aren’t too bad. Could be worse—could be spike heels,” he suggested as he pulled his bag off and set it on the table to see her shudder at the implication. “Yours are pretty nice too,” he added as she thanked him quietly.

Soon after, the professor wandered in to give them all a new assignment and handout having to do with art nouveau and launched into a lecture about the period. Halfway through the class, Jaejoong glanced down to see Boa already sketching something with long flowing lines and knew she already had an idea for her assignment. Better for her to start early anyway. Dance classes usually took up most of her time, so she might as well sketch down any inspiration she might have right away.

“That’s a nice sketch,” Boa whispered and Jaejoong glanced down to see that he’d opened his sketchbook to his drawing of the mystery man from the forest. Jaejoong had managed to sketch in most of the cover foliage and the young man’s torso, but had only managed to pencil in the back of his head and hadn’t even started on his face.

“Thanks,” he murmured and was glad that the low lights for slides hid his blush. He didn’t want Boa finding out he’d been sketching a guy he didn’t even know until all hours of the night.

“So,” Boa started when the lecture ended and the lights came up. “What are your plans tonight?”

“Starbucks after work,” Jaejoong replied as he looked over the notes he’d scribbled on his handout.

“You guys and your coffee,” she said and shook her head.

“It’s more like Yoochun and his obsession with au pairs,” he said with a smirk.

“Why do you follow him there then?” Boa giggled.

“I get to people watch and sketch them.” He set the handout down as she looked thoughtful. “And once in a while there are cute guys. Wanna come?”

“I guess I could after dance practice.” She tapped the end of her pencil against her lips.

“I’ll buy you a drink,” Jaejoong offered.

“Now it sounds like a date,” she replied with an evil grin as Jaejoong laughed. “Professor Hart put one of your pieces in the hallway near the front stairs.”

Jaejoong paused. “Which one?”

“I guess you’ll have to go find out.” She winked and Jaejoong rolled his eyes.

After class, Jaejoong headed down the hall to pause near the building’s front staircase to see his last digital piece printed and hung where everyone who passed this way could see it. He smiled, proud to see his art hanging in a new spot. There was another piece hanging somewhere near the drama department hub in the basement area of the building, and a few others in other buildings on campus when a space opened and his professor had his piece in mind. For some reason, Jaejoong felt good having this piece hanging at the front of the building that the art department was in. Every time someone came up the stairs to enter the department, they would see his piece and, hopefully, admire it.

With a glance at his phone, Jaejoong decided he didn’t want to be late for his next class and gave his piece one last look before he hurried down the stairs to leave. Jaejoong headed to White Hall, one of the larger buildings on campus and slipped into his class just ahead of the professor. He managed to sit and take notes (while sketching) through two more classes before he headed off to work.

Somehow, his mother had found him a job at this art supply store last year. He worked in the framing department, putting together mats and frames to go with whatever type of pieces or photographs people came in with. This was one of the best jobs he ever could have gotten, because whatever scrap pieces of mat board were left, he could take home and use for his own pieces from class. He knew what a waste of money it was to have to frame his work after entering galleries during his first year so saving money with used parts and getting discounts in the store from being an employee were like a godsend.

It also helped that he actually knew what he was doing with art and he was strong enough to carry a lot of the heavier pieces that some people brought in. It was a bit embarrassing when an older lady told him she’d like to frame him and take him home instead, but a job was a job.

Once he finished cleaning up the department after they closed, he headed over to the Starbucks to meet up with everyone. It was quiet when he arrived and he saw Micky across the café taking notes. Jaejoong flopped tiredly in the chair across from Micky as his friend pushed a cup toward him.

“Have some liquid strength,” he said, not bothering to look up as he kept taking notes.

“I’ll get my own, thanks,” Jaejoong replied as he rubbed his face.

“And mine?” Boa snatched the other open chair with a grin.

Jaejoong laughed and asked what she wanted before he abandoned his things to make his way up to the counter. He stopped in line behind a Japanese girl in spike heels—tiny despite the heels—and grinned. “Hey, Kumi,” he said to her.

She turned to smile at him, tucking her black and platinum blonde locks behind an ear. “Hey, Jae.” She looked him up and down. “You look good tonight. Still rooming with that hornball?”

“You mean Micky?”

“Is that his name?” she asked casually as she handed her card to the cashier and smiled at him. Jaejoong glanced up to see the regular barista Changmin taking the card to slide it. The way Kumi leaned against the counter toward him made Jaejoong glance away in amusement. When Kumi was finished flirting with Changmin, she moved away to pick up her drink and let Jaejoong move up to order.

“So what’ll it be today?” he asked with a half smirk.

Jaejoong nibbled thoughtfully on his bottom lip for a moment. “Grande chai latte for me, and a tall green tea latte for the lady,” he said as he gestured toward the table at which his friends sat.

“You got it,” Changmin said with a smile as he wrote out the cups and took Jaejoong’s card. “You know, I’d hate to think how the world would end if the sexiest girl and the greasiest guy ever got together.”

Jaejoong laughed as he moved away. “With lots of sparkle gel clogging everything?”

“Just how sparkly are we talking here?” Changmin laughed and turned to his next customer as he wound down the line all the way to the end. The last person watched Kumi walk past as she waved to Changmin, who politely waved back. “Hey, Yunho. Your usual?”

“I wish,” he grumbled before he turned. “Oh, uh, yeah,” he replied with a smile.

Changmin shook his head in amusement before writing out the cup and telling Yunho his total. “She’ll never want you.”

“What makes you think that?” Yunho frowned. “I’m as tall as you, and much more handsome.” He popped his collar for effect.

“She’s way over your head,” Changmin told him. “Pardon the pun,” he muttered as he heard a familiar, if not distinct laugh from the tables to one side of the café that were mostly hidden by the displays. “Shut up, Junsu.”

A face leaned out from behind the display with a grin, baseball hat on his head. “But I’m trying to imagine her actually over his head,” he said with a snicker and ducked back behind the display when Changmin threatened to throw a package of Madeleine cakes at him.

“He’s not going to fix your laptop if you tease him,” Yunho called at Junsu.

Changmin called to his manager, asking to go on break as he pulled his apron off. “What did he do to it this time?”

“Who knows?” Yunho shrugged and led him over to the table where Junsu was tinkering with his laptop. The young man pouted up at him with the biggest puppy dog eyes he could manage and Changmin shook his head in pity.

“Let me see,” Changmin told him and turned the laptop towards himself as he sat. “For a programmer, you sure suck with hardware.”

Junsu ignored the insult and turned to Yunho. “He’s right though, she’ll never want you.”

Yunho pouted and fiddled with his pencil. “Why is everyone so discouraging?”

“Because it’s clear she wants Changmin,” Junsu pointed out as he took a sip from his drink and Changmin snorted.

“You didn’t get coffee did you?” Yunho eyed the cup warily.

“Please,” Changmin fixed him with a look, “I know him better than that and he’d be all jittery til 2am if I let him have any. I wouldn’t do anything that cruel to you.” If the knowing look from Yunho was any indication, he knew he was right. “There I fixed it,” he said as he turned the laptop back to Junsu. He put up a hand as Junsu opened his mouth. “Don’t ask, because you can’t replicate it and I can’t sit around fixing your laptop all the time, so take better care of it. I’m going to be helping out with the lighting and effects of the plays for the drama department, so I’ll have less time to waste with you.”

“I just wanted to say thanks,” Junsu blurted out.

“Oh. Well, you’re welcome,” Changmin said with a surprised smile.

“Now, tell me how you did it,” he teased.

Yunho laughed as Junsu ducked when Changmin took a swipe at him and the laptop almost tumbled to the floor.
